Seems Like Magic?
3
But Its Just Science!
This has been one of the most popular exhibits in
the history of science centers, and it shows how
the interaction of the low pressure zones on all
sides of the ball cause it to remain trapped in
the airstream.
4
The Fast Moving Air Creates a low pressure region
.This is called the Bernoulli Effect
Moving stream of air resulting in less pressure
Area of high pressure, ball pushed inward toward
area of lowpressure
Air Source

History and Origin
  • Daniel Bernoulli, an 18th century Dutch born
    mathematician, discovered that fluids accelerated
creating a low pressure zone when forced past an
obstruction. He formulated this in his work
    Hydrodynamica which considered the basic
properties of fluid flow, pressure, density and
    velocity, and gave their fundamental
relationship. It is now known as Bernoullis
principle. His theory goes a long way to
    explaining why airplanes can fly.

Glossary
  • Bernoulli Effect  the decrease in pressure as
the velocity of a fluid increases. The phenomenon
of falling pressure in a fluid as the velocity of
the fluid stream increases. The Bernoulli
effect accounts for the lift generated by the
airfoil shape of an airplane wing.
  • High Pressure a condition of the atmosphere in
which the pressure is above average (e.g. in an
    anticyclone).
  • Low Pressure a condition of the atmosphere in
which the pressure is below average (e.g. in a
    depression).
  • Pressure continuous physical force exerted on or
against an object by something in contact with
    it.
