2Freelancer Stereotypes
- As a freelancer you probably know at least one or
two people who dont really understand what
freelancing means and feel like its just another
way to say youre looking for a full-time job
(Im looking at you, grandma!) In fact, there are
a lot of stereotypes connected with this
particular working group, but it mostly comes
from either not knowing any freelancers, living
in the 90s, or just plain envy. In this article,
we break down four of the most popular
stereotypes and mostly disprove them.
31) Freelancers dont work as much as regular
employees
- Oh, youre a freelancer? That means you sit
around on your couch and do actual work like 2
hours a day, right? (Un)fortunately, this is not
at all what freelancing means. In fact, most
freelancers work their behinds off, since they
have to take care of every single aspect of their
business. Finding clients, managing them, keeping
up with your finances, creating long-term
strategies I can go on for ages, but you get the
point. Since freelancers have a much bigger
responsibility to their own and their living
depends solely on how they do, they tend to put
more time into the job than traditional 9-5
employees.
42) Freelancers have to live on the edge,
constantly worrying about their next gig
- That one might have some truth in it, especially
when starting out. It can be difficult to
organize that constant stream of work and get
clients who know they can depend on you and vice
versa. However, once your freelancing career
starts picking up, you will find things rapidly
changing and even turning around. This is when
the real fun starts. This is the moment when you
have so many projects coming down your pipeline
that you can afford to select only the best, most
engaging ones. Or maybe even start expanding your
business and get some other freelancers to help
you out.
53) Freelancers are weird loners
- Freelancing can be lonely, but it doesnt have to
be. But an office job can be just as lonely if
you dont feel like you are a part of the
collective. Nowadays, there are a lot of
opportunities for freelancers to connect, build
networks and be as extroverted as they want to
be. Co-working office spaces come to mind. You
can also always go to local and even
international meeting of independent
professionals and form social and business
relationship for life.
64) Freelancers have bad eating habits
- The cliché that a freelancer only eats chips and
drinks cola all day is not only untrue, but also
impractical. Have you ever tried to type on a
keyboard while eating chips? It makes me shiver
with horror just by thinking about it. Anyway,
most freelancers are aware of the fact that
sitting in your chair a lot and eating greasy
foods can be bad for your health and can make as
conscious a decision to avoid it as any employee.
In fact, I find that freelancers tend to be very
proactive about their health as there are a lot
of online resources with tenths of thousands of
click on that issue, written specifically for
freelancers.
