RED PANDA
2
Scientific classification
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Mammalia
Order Carnivora
Family Ailuridae
Genus Ailurus
Species A. fulgens
3
Red Panda
  • The Red Pandas also has other names such as
(lesser panda red cat-bear) the scientific name
    is (Ailurus fulgens)
  • Genus Ailurus
  • SpeciesĀ A. fulgens
  • Add them together to
  • Make the Scientific name
  • Did you know? that the Red
  • Panda use to be called panda
  • Until the discovery of the Giant
  • Panda on 9th of November 1869

4
Warm or Cold Blooded
  • Red pandas are Warm-Blooded/Endothermic because
    of their features of
  • Fur, The thick coat of soft hair covering the
    skin of a Mammal
  • Mammal, class of warm-blooded vertebrate animals
  • Vertebrate, an animal with backbone
  • Intelligence, the ability to learn or understand
or to deal with new or trying situations
  • Adaptation, change to meet requirements to
change something to suit different conditions or
    a different purpose

5
Conservation Status
  • The Red panda is currently vulnerable with less
than 10,000 of them remaining in the wild. But
some zoos keep them like the Melbourne Zoo.

6
Adaption
  • Forests are red panda habitat, if they are cut
down these cute looking animals won't be able to
adapt well to other habitat. They depend on
bamboo for the basic requirements of food and
shelter. This part raccoon part bear might soon
become extinct if the forests are cut down at the
    current rate.

7
Bioclimatic zone
  • Red pandas are found in the mountain forests of
Nepal, India, Bhutan, China and Myanmar (Burma).
They also have some of them in zoos to make sure
    they dont extinct.

8
Are they related to Giant pandas
  • Red pandas are closely related to raccoons and
are similar to giant pandas and bears but now are
in a family of their own.

What does it do?
  • Red pandas are most active in early morning and
late afternoon spending most of the day resting
in trees conserving their energy. Red Pandas are
normally solitary creatures but come together in
    pairs in the breeding season.

Reproduction
  • After a gestation of about 134 days, litters of
one to four young are born. Young stay in the
nest for about 90 days, remain close to their
mother until the next mating season begins, and
reach adult size at about 12 months. Adult red
    pandas lead solitary lives.
  • Did you know? Red pandas live 12 to 14 years.

14
Did You Know?
  • 1. Red pandas spend most of their time in trees.
Their semi-retractable claws help them move from
    branch to branch with dexterity
  • 2. Like the giant panda, red pandas sport a false
thumb, which is actually an extension of the
    wrist bone.
  • 3. The loss of nesting trees and bamboo in the
Eastern Himalayasthe location of almost 50
percent of the red pandas habitatis causing a
decline in red panda populations across much of
their range. WWF works with local communities to
reduce human impact on the species habitat.
  • 4. These rusty-furred creatures tend to live
alone, only rarely traveling in pairs or in
    families.

15
Did You Know?
  • 5. Much smaller than their famous black-and-white
cousins, red pandas measure in at just larger
    than a domestic cat.
  • 6. Red pandas feed mainly on leaves and bamboo,
but occasionally snack on fruit, insects, bird
    eggs and small lizards, too.
  • 7. The red panda is the state animal of the
Indian state of Sikkim. In 2011, WWF helped the
government declare that the state held an
estimated 300 red pandas. We also monitor red
pandas in their habitat across India, Nepal and
    Bhutan.
