Ford Farm Tractors Started with this Man!
Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company,
and the man known to have put many Americans into
an inexpensive Ford automobile, also started the
Ford Farm tractor line.
Ford grew up on a Michigan farm himself. He
had visions of building an affordable farm
tractor for small farmers, because WWI was
raging in Europe in the early 1900's, and there
were growing concerns about farmers being able to
supply adequate world-wide food supplies.
3
A Quick Summary of Ford Tractor History! It
all started with Henry Ford's personal interest
to provide an affordable tractor to the small
American farmer. An experimental tractor was
built as early as 1907. The first mass produced
tractor was the Fordson F which began production
in 1917. Henry Ford stopped tractor production
in the US in 1928, but the production of Fordson
tractors continued in England up until 1964.
In 1938, Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson, in a
hand-shake agreement, decided to build tractors
with the Ferguson 3-point hitch system. This
led to the famous Ford N-Series tractors built
from 1939 to 1952. In 1985 Ford purchased
New-Holland, but was soon looking for a way out
of the tractor business. In 1991, the Ford-New
Holland tractor business was sold to FIAT. That
deal required FIAT to stop using the Ford name on
any tractors beginning in 2000. As a result, the
New Holland name replaced the long-time Ford name
of farm tractors.

Henry Ford's first experimental Farm Tractor
built around 1907, and now on display at the
Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
5
Early Concerns About Henry Ford Starting a Ford
Farm Tractor Line! In the early days, some of
the other shareholders of the Ford Motor Company
were concerned that the experimental expenses
associated with Henry Ford's efforts to built
farm tractors could dilute the Company's rich
corporate profits and shareholder dividends.
These concerns continued even though Henry Ford
had established a separate company (The Henry
Ford Son Company) for that purpose. These
other stockholder concerns were finally resolved
on February 2, 1916, at a Ford Motor Company
board of directors meeting. The Ford Motor
Company agreed to give up any claims to tractor
designs and patents. In turn, Henry Ford agreed
to pay Ford Motor 46,810.76 for previous
development work on tractors and to not use just
the name Ford on tractors, because the Ford
Motor Company might want to enter into the
tractor business in the future and use the Ford
name itself.
6
The Start of Ford Tractor Production! The
Henry Ford and Son Company started tractor
production in October 1917 by building 6,000
tractors for England and 1,000 tractors for
Canada to assist those countries with food
production during World War I. There was no
identification on those tractors and they became
known as MOM tractors because they were built
for Englands Ministry of Munitions. In April
1918, Henry Ford began producing this tractor for
the U.S. market with the Fordson name on the
upper radiator tank and the Henry Ford Son name
stamped into the end of the fuel tank. The
Fordson name was some what of a contraction of
the company name, but it had been registered as a
trademark by January 1918.
7
The Fordson Model F Tractor! The Fordson Model
F was the first mass produced Tractor built by
the Henry Ford Son Company. It was named the
Fordson Model F tractor because Henry Ford's
agreement with Ford Motor Company not to use the
Ford name on tractors. Factories were set up
at Dearborn, Michigan, USA, and produced Model
F's from 1917-1928. A European factory was set
up in Cork, Ireland producing them from
1919-1922. However, because of the farming
recession of the 1920s, tractor production was
suspended in the United States, although
production of Fordson spare parts continued.

10
Another New Company? In March 1919, Henry Ford
announced plans to form a new company to build
both cars and tractors. This news caused other
stockholders of the Ford Motor Company to sell
their stock on the market to an unknown buyer.
It was was later revealed that the buyer was
Henry Ford himself, which then made him the sole
owner of the giant Ford Motor Company. As a
result, the Henry Ford and Son Company was folded
into the Ford Motor Company and the name on the
end of the fuel tank was changed to Fordson. In
February 1921, production of the Fordson was
moved from the Dearborn tractor factory to the
new massive Rouge factory which received iron ore
from Fords mines, delivered in Fords ships, at
one end and delivered assembled tractors and
Model T car parts at the other end. Also, at
about that time, Ford started building its own
engine to be used in the Fordson tractors.
11
Fordson F Tractor Production! The Fordson F
dominated the U.S. tractor market from 1921 to
1926, and was many farmers first tractor, but it
also had faults. It was often hard to start,
especially if the operator forgot to switch back
to starting fuel (gasoline) before shutting off
the engine. Often water would boil in the
radiator of a Fordson F tractor, especially when
the tractor was working under heavy load
conditions. This required frequent replenishing
of the radiator with water. Although an
engineer developed a magneto and a water pump to
correct these problems, Henry Ford chose not to
adopt them. By 1927, the Fordson tractor was
encountering sales resistance and the production
of Fordson Model F ended in the U.S. in 1928.
12
Why Production of Fordson Tractors
was Discontinued in the United States!
The main reason Henry Ford stopped tractor
production in the U.S. in 1928, was probably to
give the Ford Motor Company the time necessary to
focus on the development and sales of the new
Ford Model A car which would replace the Ford
Model T car. Sales facts in the next two
slides show that the Ford's Model A car quickly
became huge success, and no doubt, it was
probably a much more profitable course of action
for the Ford Motor Company to pursue at the
time.
13
Ford Model A. Sales of this car began in late
1927. By February 4, 1929, one million had
sold, by July 24, 1929, two million had sold, and
by 1932, 20 million had been made!
14

the assembly line a 1931 Model A.
15
The Ford Motor Company Did Continue the Fordson
Tractor in England up until 1964!
Eight Fordson tractor models were produced by
Ford's England branch up until 1964, when the
U.S. and England branches of Ford Motor Company
merged. That also became the time when the
Fordson name ended for tractors built
thereafter by the Ford Motor Company. Those
eight Fordson tractor models produced by Ford in
England up until 1964 are shown in the next
eight slides. It was not until 1939 when the
production of Ford Farm tractors resumed in the
United States.

The Popular Ford Model 8N Tractor! Ford's 8N
Model Tractor (1947 -1952) was credited with
being the most popular farm tractor ever built in
North America. In its five years of production,
524,000 of the Model 8N Ford Tractors were
built. The Model 8N out sold North America's
next most popular farm tractor, the Farmall H
produced by the International Harvester Company
(IHC), but it took 13 years from 1939 to 1952
for IHC to produce its 392,227 Model H Farmall
tractors. The popularity of the Ford Model 8N
tractor was attributed to the Ferguson
three-point hitch and hydraulic system that gave
farmers convenience and safety in the attachment
and use of farm implements. Henry Ford had
acquired this feature in a hand-shake agreement
with his friend, Harry Ferguson in the late
1930's.
