Summary
This latest briefing from just-food on global
confectionery analyses some of the key issues
facing the sector - and interviews some of the
leading players in the sector. From the recent
heightened scrutiny on sugar and confectionery's
alleged role in obesity to dealing with the
intractable issue of child labour and from the
two-speed market for chewing gum and the
potential of developing economies, just-food
looks at some of the hot issues in global
confectionery.  Dean Best, just-foods editor,
met senior executives from chocolate makers
Guylian and Natra - and from candy suppliers The
Jelly Belly Candy Co. and Bon Bon Buddies - at
the ISM confectionery industry trade show to hear
their views on the challenges and opportunities
for the sector. They certainly had some very
interesting views.

Jonathan Thomas analyses the prospects for
low-sugar chocolate, with insight from
ingredients suppliers Cargill and Barry
Callebaut. just-food's contributing editor Ben
Cooper argues the cocoa sector can only be deemed
truly sustainable if child labour is
eradicated. And Ben also discussed Mondelez
International's new sustainability strategy -
taking in areas like healthier products, the
company's impact on the environment and its
sourcing - with the Cadbury owner's vice
president of external affairs Christine
McGrath. It is a must-read report for those keen
to prepare for the challenges facing the
confectionery sector and harness the
opportunities in front of it.
