Therapeutic Services
Advanced Breast Conservation Surgery - Breast
conservation surgery removes the breast tumor
and helps to preserve the breast as much as
possible. When indicted medically this has
exactly the same outcome of cancer removal as a
removal of the whole breast, but may need to be
followed by radiation therapy. Mastectomy
- is the surgical removal of a breast. Breast
reconstruction is possible in many instances
after the mastectomy. In some cases, a separate
sentinel node biopsy is performed to remove
only the first one to three axillary (armpit)
lymph nodes.  Breast Biopsy is taken up for
advanced analysis and further treatment
planning.  Modified Radical Mastectomy
-removal of the part of the affected breast,
nipple/areolar region, the pectoral (chest) major
and minor muscles, and lymph nodes. For most
women with stage I or II breast cancer,
breast-conserving surgery (BCS) plus radiation
therapy is as effective as mastectomy. Survival
rates of women treated with these 2 approaches
are the same.   Breast Reconstruction
Surgery - Breast reconstruction restores the
appearance of a breast for women who have had a
breast removed to treat breast cancer and gives
the appearance and texture of the breast as
close as possible to what they had before
treatment. Surgery is also used to check the
lymph nodes under the arm for cancer spread.
Options for this include a sentinel lymph node
biopsy and an auxillary (armpit) lymph node
dissection.

Lumpectomy - removes only the breast lump and
a surrounding margin of normal tissue.
Radiation therapy is usually given after a
lumpectomy. If adjuvant chemotherapy is to be
given as well, radiation is usually delayed
until the chemotherapy is completed. A new
form called Oncoplastic Breast Surgery minimizes
the loss of cosmesis even in breast conserving
surgeries, where now larger tumors may be dealt
with conservatively, the breast remodeled with
no danger to the cancer recurring.   Even the
breast can be removed through small incisions and
we have a nipple sparing mastectomy, where
the breast is removed through a 5cm incision and
the nipple kept intact , followed by immediate
reconstruction, so the patient recovers with a
breast and her own nipple intact.  
Radiation Therapy - Radiation therapy (or
radiotherapy) destroys any remaining breast
cancer cells in the breast, chest wall, or axilla
(underarm) area after surgery.   If
eligible some patients who undergo breast
conserving surgery can be offered the
possibility of a reverse boost, herein very thin
multiple wires are passed through the area of
the lump removal and patient gets radiation
therapy the exact place where the tumor
originated, this is coupled later with
conventional radiation and has the advantage of
decreased total radiation time.  Lowering the
risk of recurrence by accurate delivery of
radiation.   Chemotherapy - Cancer
treatment by administering cancer fighting drugs
in cycles with intervals of two to three weeks
in between. The Breast Cancer specialty hospitals

tissue during surgery is sent for analysis and
the risk of the disease recurring determined. It
has been shown to save up to 15 of all early
breast cancer patients chemotherapy.
