Did you know . . .
South Africa has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS
epidemics in the world with nearly 20 of its
people infected.
3
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
By the end of 2005, there were 5.5 million South
Africans living with HIV/AIDS.
4
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
The UNAIDS Global Report reported that 320,000
people died of AIDS related deaths in South
Africa in 2005.
Thats 877 every day!
5
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
For every person who dies of AIDS in the United
States, 20 die in South Africa.
6
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
As the numbers of HIV/Aids patients rises, so
does the number of children living without
parents or security.
7
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
In 2005, 1.2 million children were orphaned
because of AIDS.
This means that every day 3,287 children lost
their parents!
8
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
Once orphaned, these children face poverty, poor
health and lack of education.
9
HIV/AIDS in South Africa
HIV/Aids patients are not accepted in South
African society, therefore their orphans are
usually shunned as well!

My sister is six years old. There are no
grown-ups living with us. I need a bathroom tap
and clothes and shoes. And water also, inside the
house. But especially, somebody to tuck me and my
sister in at night-time. - Apiwe aged 13
