10The Installation Three Best Practice Steps
- Log on using a Local Administrator user account,
preferably the account used to originally install
the operating system. - Stop all nonessential services, particularly
monitoring services such as antivirus programs. - Clear the System Temporary folder.
11Log On as Local Administrator
- Identify original Local Administrator account
using Computer Management - Right-click My Computer. (On a computer running
Windows NT 4.0, use the User Manager instead of
these steps. Domain controllers do not have
access to Local Users and Groups.) - Click Manage.
- Expand Local Users and Groups.
- Click Users.
- In the details pane, locate the Administrator
account. - The description is Built-in account for
administering this computer/domain. - If necessary, change the password with a
right-click.
12Stop All Nonessential Services and Programs
Windows XP
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then
click OK. - On the General tab, change Normal Startup - load
all device drivers and services to Diagnostic
Startup - load basic devices and services only. - On the Services tab, turn on Windows Installer.
- Click Apply, and then click Close.
- Restart when you are prompted to do so. When
the installation is completed, you can return
Msconfig to the default settings by selecting
Normal Startup - load all device drivers and
services on the General tab.

- The Msconfig from Windows XP will work equally
well on Windows 2000 however, if it is not
available, then - Click Start, point to Settings, click Control
Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and

monitoring programs.
