3
What is Nicotine
  • Nicotine is originally find in tobacco plants
  • Nicotine is a stimulant, just like cocaine.
  • It works by speeding up the processing rate of
    the central nervous system.

4
Whats inside of tobacco
  • More than 400 unknown chemicals, including
    poisons and 50 cancer-causing substances
  • It also contains tar carbon monoxide

5
Why its so addictive
  • Many smokers also find handling a cigarette to be
a soothing habit. This resulting dependence on
nicotine both psychological and physical is
responsible for continuing the cigarette habit
even in smokers who know that it may be (or is)
    harming their health.

6
Damages from Smoking
  • 400,000 people die every year from smoking.
  • More than the annual deaths caused by alcohol,
AIDS, traffic accidents, drug abuse, murder, and
    suicide combined.

7
How bad is SHS
  • 300 non-smokers die from lung cancer.
  • SHS more dangerous than inhaling directly.
Inhaling 2 times more tar and 5 more times
    carbon-monoxide.
  • Second-hand smoke is linked to the deaths of at
    least 1,100 Canadians every year.

8
SHS Places
  • at home
  • at work
  • at school
  • in public places such as restaurants and bars
  • in vehicles such as the family car

9
Man Smoking
  • 50 cancer-causing substances have been found in
    tobacco smoke.
  • The five-year survival rate from lung cancer is
    less than 15.

10
Woman Smoking
  • Women who smoke may have a harder time getting
pregnant and may suffer from more health problems
during the pregnancy. They may also experience a
    harder labour and delivery.

11
Other tobacco products
  • Chewing tobacco - risk of cancer of the mouth
  • People who
    chew tobacco become
  • as addicted to
    nicotine as smokers.
  • Snuff - Snuff is fine cut tobacco that is either
    moist or
  • dry. Moist snuff increases the
    risk of cancer of
  • the oral cavity and larynx
  • Cigars - Smoking 1-2 cigars a day, even if not
inhaled, doubles a person's risk for many
cancers. As well, the second-hand smoke from
cigars has a much higher concentration of some
    cancer-causing chemicals, increasing the health
    risk to non-smokers.
