Background Information

• Autoimmune disease
• Affects central nervous system
• Neurons controls body, create thoughts and carry
  information
• Around neurons is a fatty layer called myelin
  sheath, which helps in carrying electrical
  signals
• MS causes destruction of myelin
• Neurons cant conduct their electrical signals

Causes

• Cause not known
• Affects woman more than men
• Damage of myelin sheath
• With time nerve damage gets worse
• Inflammation immune system attacking nerve cells
  
• Nerve impulses blocked
• Reoccurrences of inflammation

• Decreased
• Judgment
• Attention Span
• Ability to Control Small Movements
• Discomfort of the Eye
• Facial Pain

• Fatigue
• Muscle Spasms
• Hard Time Understanding Speech
• Difficulty Speaking
• gt Speech Slurred

Diagnosis

• Difficult to diagnose
• Definite diagnoses made when at least 2 separate
  dymyelinated events occur about 30 days apart.
• Clinical data sometimes is enough to diagnose MS
• McDonald criteria

• Examinations
• Eye
• Problems with internal structure of eye
• Unusual responses of pupil
• Eye movements
• Tests
• MRI of head and spine
• Cerebrospinal fluid
• Lumbar puncture

Treatment

• No cure
• Several helpful therapy
• Intravenous corticosteroids / plasma exchange
• Immune modulators
• Medicine for muscle spasms and fatigue
