What is an information literacy model?

• Follow the Big6 information problem-solving model
  whenever you need and use information.
• The Big6 integrates information search and use
  skills, along with technology tools, in a process
  to find, use, apply, and evaluate information to
  specific needs and tasks.

• Where do I find those sources?

Lets look at an example

• Im hungry
• Lets get a pizza!

• I want to order a pizza

What sources would help me?

• Phonebook
• Newspaper
• Internet
• Coupons

Where do I find those sources?

• Phonebook is in the drawer
• The newspaper is in the recycling bin
• The internet is on the computer in the library or
  lab
• Coupons are on the bulletin board
• The phone is on the counter

When I know what sources and where they are what
do I do next?

• Decide which brand of pizza you want (Dominos,
  Pizza Hut, etc.).
• Decide what toppings you want.
• Decide what size pizza you want.
• If I call in my order, it will be ready when I
  get there to pick it up, OR, maybe they will
  deliver it to me.

with it?

• Duh!
• Call in your order!

• I have my pizza
• It tastes great!
• Id say this was a success!

Now, how do you apply that to school?

• You have been assigned a task or research
  project.
• You need to start by defining what you want to do
  and what you need to know to complete the
  project.

My project is to write a report about tigers

• What do I need to learn
• Where do they live?
• What do they eat? Where/How do they get their
  food?
• How big are they?
• Do they live alone or in groups?

• Encyclopedia general (World Book) or special
  (Amazing Animals of the World)
• Nonfiction book
• Internet
• Computer databases
• Magazine
• Interview

• School Library
• Public Library
• Computer internet and databases
• Interview the Zookeeper at the Seneca Park Zoo

When I know what sources and where they are what
do I do next?

• Visit the library at school
• Visit the public library
• Go to the library, computer lab, or arrange time
  to use the computer at home.

I have the info and the sources, what do I do
with them?

• Decide which sources are the best, most accurate
  sources
• Take notes paraphrase, dont copy
• Make an outline or put my note cards in order.
• Write my rough draft.
• Edit, then write my final copy

Was I successful?Evaluate your project

• Have I answered all the questions I had in the
  beginning?
• Did I do a good job writing my report spelling,
  punctuation, organization?
• Did I do everything I could according to the
  rubric for the project to get a 4?
