  • Carl Orff was born in Munich on July 10th 1895.
  • As a child he was always very musically talented.
  • Orff began learning piano at the age of five and
    cello at the age of seven.
  • By the time he was nine years old, Orff was
    composing music for his puppet theater.
  • From 1912 through 1914, Orff studied at the
    Munich academy of Music.

    officers and scholars.
  • Both of Orffs grandfathers were major generals
  • Orffs father, Heinrich was an officer.
  • He also played the piano and various string
    instruments.

    talent and encourage it
  • In 1917 Orff, following his familys footsteps,
    was enlisted for the military service in the

  • Luise Rinser, a writer, from 1954 to 1959
  • Liselotte Schmitz, who was nine years younger
    than Orffs daughter, from 1960 until his death.

Carmina Burana
  • Carl Orffs composing breakthrough and most
    famous composition was Carmina Burana
  • Carmina Burana premiered in Frankfurt/Main in
    1937.
  • It is the first of a trilogy that also includes
    Catulli Carmin (1943) and Triofo di Afrodite
    (1953)
  • Carmina Burana was based off of medieval poetry
    found in a Bavarian monastery in 1803 written by
    the Goliards.

  • After studying at the Munich Music Academy from
    1912 through 1914, Orff continued his musical
    studies with Hermann Zilcher, a German composer,
    pianist and music teacher
  • Orff was the Kapellmeister, conductor, at the the
    Munich Chamber Theater in 1916
  • While recovering from being buried alive in 1917,
    Orff was the Kapellmeister at the National
    Theater in Mannheim, and later at the Court
    Theater of the Grand Duchy of Darmstadt.
  • In 1920 Orff studied with Heinrich Kaminski in
    Ried/Upper Bavaria.
  • In 1924 Carl Orff co-founded the Günther School
    in Munich with Dorthee Günther

Influence on Music Education
  • Orffs most famous work in Music Education is
    Schulwerk, or Music for Children.
  • In Orffs Schulwerk, there are no fixed standards
    for the curriculum.
  • It is the teachers responsibility to adapt his
    work to fit the student.
  • His ideas and suggestions featured in his
    Schulwerk allow it to be used from early
    childhood education to young adult
  • The activities in Schulwerk avoid long
    theoretical introductions and try to make the
    learning as fun and bearable for kids.

In The End
  • Sadly, on March 29th, 1982 Carl Orff died at the
    age of 87
  • He is buried in the Chapel of Sorrow in the
    monastery and pilgrimage church of Andechs.
  • During his long life, Orff composd more than
    twelve pieces, and won several awards for his
    compositions
  • The Carl Orff foundation maintains the artistic
    estate of Carl Orff and spreads his music and
    intelligence around the world.
