Mérida Atmospheric Research Station (MARS)
Currently preparing the radiometer for
installation on Pico Espejo at Mérida, Venezuela
(8N, 71W, 4765 m asl). MIRA 2 will be part of
the joint Venezuelan and German project of the
Mérida Atmospheric Research Station (MARS). Two
ground-based microwave radiometers and an optical
instrument operating in DOAS mode will be
installed on Pico Espejo by the Forschungszentrum
Karlsruhe and the University of Bremen. FTIR,
LIDAR, and UV-A/B spectrometers will be deployed
at the nearby Instituto Astrofisico at an
altitude of 3600 m by the Alfred-Wegener-Institut,
Bremerhaven.

Pico Espejo is expected to provide excellent
conditions for ground-based millimeter wave
radiometry due to its low total column water
vapor content. Analyses using NCEP/NCAR data
covering the last 50 years suggest that nearly
year-round measurements at 270 GHz will be
feasible. Another advantage is the good
accessibility of this high altitude location by
the worlds highest cable car.A scientific,
