2
Strategic planning
  • The process of addressing change by developing
goals along with sets of actions to achieve them.
  • Where are we going?
  • How are we getting there?
  • How will we know if weve gotten there?

3
Mission
  • First, consider your mission statement
  • The mission of The Campus Kitchens Project is to
use service as a tool to
  • Strengthen Bodies by using existing resources to
meet hunger and nutritional needs in our
    community
  • Empower Minds by providing leadership and service
    learning opportunities to students, and
    educational benefits to adults, seniors,
children, and families in need and
  • Build Communities by fostering a new generation
    of community-minded adults through resourceful
    and mutually beneficial partnerships among
students, social service agencies, businesses and
    schools.

4
The SWOT process
  • Next, consider your
  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Threats

5
Goals vs. Objectives
  • Objectives
  • Relevant, attainable, measurable, and
    time-limited.
  • Outcome objectives outcomes achieved as a result
    of program activities.
  • Process objectives the means by which we hope to
    achieve the outcome objectives.
  • Goals
  • Long-term endeavors dealing with problems the
program is attempting to prevent, eradicate or
    ameliorate.
  • Do not need to be measurable.

6
A few other types of objectives
  • Service objectives tally of services rendered.
  • Ex) The Campus Kitchen will increase meal service
to serve 100 meals per week by May 2009.
  • Ex) The Campus Kitchen will provide Culinary Job
Training to 12 individuals each year starting in
    March 2009.
  • Product objectives designed to provide a
tangible outcome to benefit a target population.
  • Ex) Meals provided to partner agencies will save
them at least 6000 per year starting in 2009.
  • Ex) 80 of all CJT graduates will find a job in
the restaurant business within 6 months.
  • Operational objectives convey the attempt to
improve the general operation of the
    organization.
  • Ex) The Campus Kitchen will score 10 higher on
the next safety and sanitation audit in October
    2009.

7
Considerations for your objectives
  • Time frame
  • Target
  • Is there a target population/product?
  • Result
  • Are they achievable for your staffing?
  • Do they conflict with each other?
  • Can you keep the balance between them?
  • Will there be other inadvertent consequences?
  • What are the outcomes to be achieved?
  • Criterion
  • Are they measurable?
  • Responsibility
  • Is everyone in the organization involved?
  • Will there be resistance to the change(s)
    proposed?

8
Working intervention hypothesis
  • If the following actions are takenthen the
    following results can be expected...
  • A basis for long range planning that links
    activities and outcomes.
  • Guides continuous evaluation and cost analysis.

9
Working intervention hypothesis example
  • Target population low income families
  • If the following actions (the basis for process
    objectives) are taken
  • Improve access to fresh and healthy food through
initiatives with local farmers and bulk food
    retailers.
  • Improve knowledge and skills to cook meals on a
    budget through educational programming.
  • Then the following results can be expected (the
    basis for outcome objectives)
  • Reduction in obesity, diabetes, and other weight
related health conditions for adults and
    children.

Contingency planning
  • Be prepared for a range of possibilities and
    possible problems or complications
  • Ex) Problem with the Campus Kitchen stove, which
is needed for cooking shift Wednesday
  • Plan A Problem will be resolved by then, use
    kitchen as usual
  • Plan B Stove in other kitchen will be available
  • Plan C Stove in other kitchen not available, use
    an alternate kitchen
  • Plan D Cancel this meal service or prepare food
items that are served cold, such as sandwiches

12
February blog questions
  • Use a format such as the one below to guide you
in setting major outcome objective(s) for your
Community Impact Project and determining the
necessary steps to reach them. Use the working
intervention hypothesis model to determine the
outcome and process objectives. Be specific.
  • Determine the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats to your Campus Kitchen
    that may affect this plan.
