The problem

• Faculty in need of basic skills
• Low response rate to formal training
• Limited number of staff (2 FT workstudy)
• Faculty repeatedly asking same questions

How we tried addressing it

• Customized small-group training (including
  on-site)
• Drop-in training during the summer
• Brown-bag sessions

But, none has met with much success.

Some ideas about why these approaches havent
worked

• Too busy sawing to sharpen the saw
• Know just enough get by (inefficiently)
• Dont want to impose
• Skills lost if not immediately used

How it works

• Faculty and staff are invited to schedule a time
  at their convenience when the Instructional
  Technologist can come to their offices and watch
  over their shoulders (shadow them).
• The Instructional Technologist then offers
  suggestions, based upon their unique needs and
  level of computer savvy, for making the computer
  work FOR them, not AGAINST them.

What were finding
Users typically need help

• Managing folders
• Organizing desktop
• Using quick-launch features
• Deleting temporary files
• Uninstalling unused programs
• Avoiding pop-up ads
• Optimizing performance

Where we plan to go from here

• Develop FAQs for our Virtual Help Desk, based
  upon the tasks we find users often need help
  performing
• Continue offering Brown Bag and small group
  training specifically geared to counter common
  problems
• Continue offering the Shadow Program
