- The first Kerrville Folk Festival was held June 1
through 3, 1972, in the 1,200-seat Kerrville
Municipal Auditorium 2,800 fans from all over
Texas and as far away as Colorado attended the
thirteen-performer event. The festivals at
Kerrville were a direct outgrowth of the Austin
Zilker Park KHFI-FM Summer Music festivals
(1964-68), the Chequered Flag folk music club on
Lavaca Street in Austin (1967-70), and the eight
Longhorn Jazz festivals (1966-73), as well as the
"live" and recorded programs of Austin folk
artists.
4The Alamo!
- This is the Alamo.
- The Bexar fell on March 6, 1835.
- In 1836 the land known as Alamo Heights was
included as public land in the original survey of
the city San Antonio.
5Hill Country - History
- Between 1840 and 1850 significant numbers of
settlers, mostly southern mountaineers, had been
attracted to the Hill Country - The initial settlement of the remaining Hill
Country counties occurred in the decade before
the outbreak of the Civil War

- By 1870 the population of Gillespie County was 86
percent German, Comal 79 percent, Kendall 62
percent, and Mason 56 percent
7Stephen Austin
- Brown Austin, was born in 1828. After his
father's death on August 1829, the child was
taken into the home of his aunt, Mrs. Emily
Margaret Austin Perry.

8Sam Houston!
- Sam Houston, one of the most illustrious
political figures of Texas, was born on March 2,
1793, - On January 22, 1829, he married nineteen-year-old
Eliza Allen of Gallatin, Tennessee.
9Emily Edwards!
- Emily Edwards, artist, historian, teacher, and
cofounder of the San Antonio Conservation
Society, was born in San Antonio on October 7,
1888, - Her mother died in 1895.
- In 1905 she moved to Chicago, where she stayed
with relatives and attended the Art Institute art -

- Festivals in Texas, always featuring music or at
least garnished by it, reflect a tradition of
community cooperation and celebration that began
at least as early as the arrival of permanent
settlers their traditions with them - Early European Texans of all faiths, occupations,
and ethnic backgrounds brought.

- OKTOBERFEST is a colorful, festive celebration
of Fredericksburg, Texas' German heritage. - OKTOBERFEST has become an annual tradition around
the world.

seminars, and a rare wine auction.

Displays of sparkling gowns, photos and other
memorabilia tell the story of Laredo's
Washington's Birthday Celebration, now more than
a century old.
14San Antonio-Festival
- FIESTA SAN ANTONIO. Fiesta San Antonio,
previously called Fiesta San Jacinto, is a
ten-day festival held every spring in San
Antonio. It originated in the 1891 flower parade
conceived by Ellen Maury Slayden, wife of
Congressman James L. Slayden, as an April 21
salute to the heroes of the battles of the Alamo
and San Jacinto.
