Visual Arts Performance Task 3-1
Standards VA3 Subject Matter, Symbols, and
Ideas The student chooses and evaluates a range
of subject matter, symbols, and ideas. VA3a The
student will compare work based on themes,
symbols, events, and ideas. VA4 History and
Culture The student demonstrates understanding
of the visual arts in relation to history and
culture. VA4a The student investigates
universal themes and concepts in historical
periods, styles, and cultures to include that of
the host nation. VA5 Characteristics and
Merits of Work The student reflects upon and
assesses the characteristics and merits of
his/her work and the work of others. VA5c The
student uses developmentally appropriate criteria
and vocabulary to discuss and evaluate works of
art.
Performance Task Your family is planning a big
reunion. All the children in your family have
been asked to help decorate for the celebration
by bringing to the reunion an artwork that places
him or her in a family group setting or at play.
To make it more fun, the setting of the artwork
of your family members will be in a period, time,
or culture other than your present one.

You will
1. Examine works of art based on the theme of
family or play that reflect different periods of
history and diverse cultures. You can do this
alone or in a small group.
2. Compare and contrast ideas about self,
people, places, and events, recognizing that
universal themes can be expressed in unique ways
through different materials and styles. You will
produce a graphic organizer that reflects your
thinking. Examples of graphic organizers you may
use are T-charts, matrices, webs, diagrams. Meet
with your teacher and discuss your ideas.
3. Develop an original work of art that
expresses self-awareness by depicting yourself in
a family group or at play, in a different time
period, culture, or style other than your own.
4. Upon completion of your artwork, you will
meet with a partner to reflect upon your work and
the work of your partner. Using criteria
determined by your teacher, select a format such
as video/audio tape, written statement, or
checklist for your reflection.
5. Submit your final artwork and your reflection
to your teacher.

Circumstances of Performance The student work is
produced under the following conditions

Commentaries on Criteria for Success

• Artwork in the students portfolio shows evidence
  that standards VA5c, VA4a, and VA3a were met.
  The student wrote comments that compare and
  contrast his/her likes and dislikes of a
  historical period (The Middle Ages) and
  demonstrated reflective analysis of information.
  To better understand the culture, the project
  included the use of internet research, prints,
