Engaging Employees Global Level
  • We Will if You Will
  • Employees will only fully engage with company
initiatives, if the management are fully engaged
    and leading by example.
  • Brothers top management consistently promote
    Brothers environmental policy, practice and
    involvement with environmental events

Management Commitment
  • Prepare for survival
  • Promote business efficiency
  • Differentiate your business by achievement of
    excellence
  • Ensure these objectives are integrated into the
    business operation at every level
  • Engage staff in environmental initiatives

5
Engaging Employees Local Level
6
Company Car CO2 Buy-Back Scheme
  • Making changes to company car policy is always a
    contentious issue
  • Sales people can often see cars as a motivating
factor, so any new initiatives had to be
    optional, but desirable
  • The changes also had to fit into the requirements
    of the leasing agreement

7
Company Car CO2 Buy-Back Scheme
  • The scheme is simple every pay grade is
allocated with a benchmark vehicle, including
price and CO2 emissions (based on the lease
    company information)
  • The driver then selects a vehicle from the list,
    within their benchmark limit
  • If they select a vehicle with a CO2 emission
lower than their benchmark, they are then paid
back (at the end of the lease term) _at_ 20 per
    unit.

8
Company Car CO2 Buy-Back Scheme
  • So how does this work in practice -
  • In 2005 the benchmark vehicle for my grade was
set at 219 (5 Series BMW), however because I
selected a car with CO2 of only 167 (3 Series
    BMW), I got a payback of 20 x 52 1,040 (less
tax) at the end of the 3 year lease
  • Some drivers have opted to take the money and put
it towards accessories for their replacement
vehicle so they get a higher specification,
    instead of a cash incentive
  • Because of the 3 year period between vehicle
changes, we are still analysing the results of
this initiative, but we have already had a lot of
    positive feedback from employees

9
Driver Training
  • Following on from an initiative developed in our
offices in France and Germany, we are now looking
to introduce some additional training for all
    company car drivers
  • In the past we concentrated on the safety aspects
of driving, but we are now going to add in the
elements of economical driving, to reduce CO2
emissions and to reduce fuel expenses
  • We have also started to work with our sales teams
to help them plan their routes more efficiently,
    to reduce road miles

10
Travel Policy
  • Our travel policy
  • Requires staff to consider public transport for
    business travel
  • Where possible meetings are held in central
    locations
  • Some overseas meetings are eliminated by the use
    of video conferencing facilities

11
Business Travel European HQ
  • Business Travel 2007 accounted for 3,072,290 Km
    and 348 tonnes CO2
  • The use of the video conference equipment
ratherthan flying generated the following Carbon
    Dioxidesavings
  • Training over the internet saved 80,0704 Km and
    8.9 Tonnes of CO2

Assumes only 1 person present and therefore
savings are based on 1 persons travel
12
Sustainable Transport - Logistics
  • As a global group Brother Industries have also
been looking at the CO2 impact of their operation
  • They have calculated that by reducing the
transport impact by just 10, it will be the
equivalent of all the energy use of its European
Sales offices combined (in financial terms)

13
Sustainable Transport - Logistics
  • They have therefore started to gather data on the
miles travelled by each shipment -
  • From factory to port
  • From port to storage location
  • From storage location to distribution
  • From distribution to customer
  • Some European sales operations have also
    consolidated their storage locations into
centralised depots, to reduce stock holding and
transportation of product (for example, the
haulier will delivery Brother goods, with other
manufacturers goods, going to the same
    destination).

14
Sustainable Transport
  • In addition to the business related transport and
travel, Brother UK also encourage staff to
understand their own impact on the environment
  • We provide
  • Showers for staff that want to change when they
    get to work
  • Secure facilities for storing bikes on site
  • We also promote wider initiatives with staff
like the national lift share day to raise
    awareness
