Contacting Hospitals, Employers, Etc.
  • Look on their website for the Nurse Recruiter (or
    Human Resources or Employment Dept)
  • They generally require that you send a resume,
    cover letter, hospital application and either a
    list of references or letters of recommendation.

Follow-Up with Employers
  • Call to ensure receipt of resume, application,
    etc. so that your file is complete and find out
    about their hiring timeframe
  • If they need written recommendations (ex. future
    graduate schools would), consider using
    Interfolio.com
  • Stay organized! Keep records of who you contacted
    and when, what you discussed, etc.
  • Get Business Cards or Appropriate Spelling of
    Names and Title
  • Write Thank You Notes
  • Call in a Couple of Weeks to Check In to See if
    They Need Anything Else from You

  • As you can see on my resume Im graduating from
    the University of Virginia School of Nursing this
    May. I have identified that I want to pursue a
    position as a Nurse in the NICU and have narrowed
    my geographic preference to the D.C. area.

  • My recent clinical was in the NICU at the UVA
    hospital. This was an incredible experience and
    I realized my passion for working in this area.
    In preparation for a career in this field I also
    recently attended the .conference and spoke to
    several individuals who have confirmed my
    interest in this area of nursing.
  • I would welcome any information or advice that
    you have about finding opportunities in this
    field or other referrals I might contact.

  • At this point switch into the role of an
    Investigative Reporter.
  • Ask questions to unearth more information
  • Try and get the names and contact information for
    other referrals
  • Thank them for all their time and helpfulness
  • Follow-up with a thank you note (or email)
  • Once you have gotten a job be sure to let them
    knowand show your appreciation again!

Salary Negotiation
  • Dont sell yourself short (particularly when

  • Know the average salary for that geographic

    cost of living impact on salary.
