Rule 5 Personal Ejection Fouls
  • Personal (5-1)
  • Fouls of a serious nature
  • 1-3 minutes depending on officials judgment
    regarding the severity and perceived intent
  • Award ball to opposing team
  • Cross-Check (5-2)
  • Hands spread on handle
  • Thrusting away or holding it extended
  • Note Use the portion of the handle between the
    hands to hold an opponent is holding (see Rule
    6-3 pg 58) not a cross-check

  • Illegal Body Check (5-3)
  • Not in possession or not within 5-yards of loose
    ball
  • Avoidable hit after a shot or pass (late hit is
    the responsibility of trail official to protect
    shooter/passer)
  • Any part of opponents body (except feet) on
    ground
  • From rear, below waist, or above shoulders
  • Initiating contact with head (spearing/non-releasa
    ble)
  • Notes Watch for high body checks a 2-hand
    thrust that slides up to head should be called.
    No foul if player to be checked - turns, jumps,
    or ducks. To be legal both hands must remain on
    the crosse.

  • Protect the players at all times!!!
  • Protect head, neck and unprotected areas (hip,
    back, and kidneys)
  • Call the Cross Check too much on the back
  • Call the back check this is a slash
  • Call the poke check to ribs that stops player in
    his tracks this is a slash
  • Trail has to protect shooter/passer
  • Call check that starts as legal check and rolls
    up to head this is an illegal body check

  • Illegal Crosse (5-4) review Rules 1-6/7/8
  • Illegal crosse is 3-min non-releasable (NR)
    remove from game
  • Deep pocket is 1-min NR (can be fixed)
  • Fails free movement test is a 3-min NR remove
    from game unless official determines Deep
    Pocket is retarding movementthen 1-min NR can
    be fixed
  • Note call most severe violation (review 5.4.B
    page 55)
  • Preventive(end cap, no stop, gt 6 strings and
    leathers)
  • Broken stick is no stick (remove - pick another
    crosse)
  • Illegal Equipment (5-5)
  • 1-minute non-releasable
  • Maximum of 1-min for multiple equipment
    violations
  • Limits Max of 4-mins NR for illegal crosse and
    illegal equipment.

  • Slashing (5-6)
  • Deliberate viciousness or reckless abandon
    regardless of whether opponents crosse or body is
    struck (uncontrolled swing - varies with level of
    play be consistent)
  • Striking opponent except in act of passing,
    shooting, or attempting to scoop (the follow
    through)
  • Gloved hands considered part of crosse
  • Applies to attackmen when they become defenders
  • Note If player in possession uses some part of
    body to protect his crosse not hold, push or
    control (see 6-11) no slash unless head or
    neck struck (not brush)

  • Tripping (5-7)
  • Obstructing an opponent at or below the waist
    with crosse, hands, arm, feet, or legs includes
    stumble
  • Note Youll know it when you see it dont call
    push
  • Unnecessary Roughness (5-8)
  • Excessively violent hold or push
  • Avoidable act deliberate and extremely
    violent(review 5.8.A pg 56 run through
    screen and 5.8.B pg 56 late hit)
  • Check w/ gloved hand(s) delivered with punching
    blow
  • Note Could include legal body check (review
    5.8.C pg 57 buddy pass)

  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct (5-9)
  • Non-Releasable 1-3 minutes
  • Argue with or attempt to influence official
  • Use threatening, profane or obscene language or
    gestures
  • Bait, taunt, call undue attention to oneself, or
    any act considered unsportsmanlike by the
    officialsNotes 2 USC NR results in Ejection
    Taunting (race, religion, gender, or national
    origin) -gt Ejection (Rule 5-11)
  • Releasable typically 1-min
  • Repeatedly commit same technical foul
  • Deliberately fail to return to field of play
  • Deliberately fail to comply with substitution
    rules

Mechanic (unsportsmanlike)
  • Available Tools (1-6 depending on severity)
  • Use communication skills with head coach
  • Call Conduct foul (lose possession)
  • Call Conduct foul (in home serve 30-sec)
  • Call Unsportsmanlike Conduct foul (1-3 min NR)
  • Call 2nd Unsportsmanlike Conduct NR foul
    (elevates to 3-mins and ejection)
  • Call Flagrant Misconduct (3-min NR and Ejection)
  • Note Ejection has to be reported to assignor and
    school is fined plus additional restrictions are
    imposed on player/coach ejected.

  • Dont tolerate comments from assistant coaches or
    players
  • Avoid style one use lower voice dont
    point/touch or yell be professional

  • DQ player not ejected can remain on bench
  • Ejection (5-11)
  • Deliberate strike (or attempt)
  • Leave the bench (trail responsible to control
    bench)
  • Second non-releasable unsportsmanlike conduct
    foul
  • Taunting (race, gender, religion, and national
    origin)
  • Flagrant Misconduct (review page 54)
  • Note Ejection is 3-min NR record number, time,
    quarter, score for report - notify assignor
