Title: FHM Riparian Group

FHM Riparian Group

Inventory and Monitoring Institute USDA Forest
Service
2
Riparian Indicator Resolution
  • Whereas, riparian forests are recognized as
having values disproportionate with the amount of
area they represent to society in terms of
    healthy wildlife populations, clean water,
valuable areas for recreation, valuable habitat
for many life forms from plants to insects and
    fungi

3
Riparian Indicator Resolution
  • Whereas, FHM recognizes the current plot design
and sampling scheme for upland forests is
inappropriate for some riparian forest lands

4
Riparian Indicator Resolution
  • Whereas, FHM recognizes the current plot design
and sampling scheme for upland forests is
inappropriate for some Riparian Forest Lands

5
Riparian Indicator Resolution
  • Whereas, riparian forests are recognized as
having values disproportionate with the amount of
area they represent to society in terms of
    healthy wildlife populations, clean water,
valuable areas for recreation, valuable habitat
for many life forms from plants to insects and
    fungi,

6
Riparian Indicator Resolution
  • Whereas, riparian forests cross multiple
ownerships and FHM is comprised of partners with
    responsibilities that cross all ownerships,
  • Be it resolved that the FHM program manager
authorizes the establishment of a team of people
and set aside an appropriate amount of funds for
travel money (for participants not in FHM) to
convene a workshop(s), with experts from around
    the country.

7
PURPOSE
  •  To review the P2 and P3 plots in the database
that are associated with riparian zones to
quantify how much data we already have in
    riparian areas
  • To review how many additional plots we would
have if we ignored the minimum of 120 definition
    for determining what is forest

8
PURPOSE
  •  Review how well or poorly the current plot
    design works in riparian zones
  • Review the current indicators and identify others
that might be measured on the plot. Consider the
adequacy of the sample if the P2 plots in
riparian zones had soil, veg, lichens and other
    indicators collected on them.

TASK LIST
  • Riparian Definition
  • List of Related Programs Literature Review
  • Review of P2 P3 Plots
  • Review Current Measurements ID others
  • Compose List of Potential Riparian Indicators

12
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Riparian areas are three-dimensional eco-tones of
interaction that include terrestrial and aquatic
ecosystems that extend into the groundwater, up
above the canopy, outward across the floodplain,
up the near-slopes that drain to the water,
laterally into the terrestrial ecosystem, and
along the water course at a variable width.

13
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Compiled Literature Review and Related Programs
    are both on the website
  • http//www.fs.fed.us/institute/fhm_riparian/

14
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Current Plot Measurements Reviewed
  • Additional Measurements Suggested

15
UPCOMING WORK
  • Work with States to Overlay P2, P3 plots on
    Available State Riparian Coverages
  • Locate states that have full Photography Coverage
so that assessment of Riparian Areas can be made
  • Compile Riparian Area map of Test Areas
    Representing different ecoregions

16
UPCOMING WORK
  • Review how well the current plot design works in
    riparian zones
  • Identify alternative sampling methods to the grid
including relaxing the definition of forest
  • Evaluate alternative approaches against a test
    data set
