8Grant making foundations increased their giving
2.8 in 2008
- The more than 75,000 U.S. grantmaking foundations
increased their giving 2.8 percent in 2008 to an
estimated 45.6 billion, according to Foundation
Growth and Giving Estimates Current Outlook
(2009 Edition). Giving did not grow as much as
had been expected due to the extreme nature of
the economic downturn. Over 67 percent of
foundations surveyed said they expect to reduce

- December 2006 Education and health received
the largest shares of foundation grant dollars in
2005, according to the Foundation Giving Trends
Preview. This snapshot report provides a first
look at 2005 grantmaking patterns. Among other
key findings international affairs and the
environment posted the fastest growth in grant
dollars between 2004 and 2005. A detailed
analysis of these findings will be published in
February in the 2007 edition of Foundation Giving
