- Compare Chinese New Year in America to the
traditional celebration in China - Discuss Chinese New Year Greetings in Hong Kong,

- Students will recognize that different groups of
people celebrate holidays unique to their own - Students will learn the concept of tradition
- Students will learn that people from different
cultures can have an impact on them
5Hindu New YearLesson Three Outline
- Introduction
- Talk about the Five Days of Diwali and the Gods,
Goddesses and Demons. - Discuss the main things in Diwali like diyas,
sweets, aarti, rangolis and firecrackers. - Discuss about the things that most Hindu people
do during Diwali festival like the rituals and
puja, decorating houses with torans and rangolis
and visiting family members.

- Revise the vocabulary that they learned during
the previous lesson - Give pictures and play a mix match game
- Bring in some sample sweets, firecrackers, or
saris that Indian women wear - Give handout of rangolis pattern and have them
color it

- Explain where the celebration is celebrated
- Hmong New Year activities food, meeting friends,
watching performances, etc. - Discuss the kinds of clothing worn

- Create a Hmong American New Year
- Incorporate information from last lesson to
compare and contrast current Hmong American New
Year with traditional celebrations.

10Japanese New YearLesson Seven Outline
- Introduce the lesson
- Pass out a sheet with all the different
aspects/traditions of the Japanese New Year and
have them write down key things about each
tradition - Talk about the Japanese New Year or give handouts
to the kids. - Ask each student to share what they thought was
the most interesting about the lesson - If there is time, play a song regarding the new
years season

- Introduce the tradition of the new year greeting
card in Japan. Have a print out for each student
of the background and information of the event - Introduce and give directions for the activity
- Hand out or have projected sample cards, the
Asian zodiac chart, and sample phrases in
Japanese - Let them work and have fun with the cards!

Years music to get them in the mood of the
celebration - They will present their work in front of the
entire class
