Title: HEART RATE MONITORS

1
HEART RATE MONITORS
  • Healthy hearts in the zone
  • Lesson 1

2
RESTING (A.M.) HEART RATE
  • Take first thing in the A.M.
  • Training Effect -The fitter you are the less
your heart works to do the same activity
  • Low resting HR
  • Less physiological stress on heart
  • Over a lifetime total of heart contractions
    will be lower
  • Save more than 700 million heartbeats over life

3
AMBIENT HEART RATE
  • Measured when body awake but sedentary
  • (sitting position but awake)
  • Ranges 50-90 bpm
  • Training Effect
  • Influenced by
  • Body position
  • External influences
  • Temperature
  • Hydration
  • Food ingested
  • Internal influences
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Hunger
  • sleep

AVERAGE AMBIENT HEART RATE
4
DELTA HEART RATE
  • The measure of the hearts response to a change
    in body position.
  • Usually from sitting to standing
  • Standing Heart Rate
  • - Sitting Heart Rate
  • Delta Heart Rate
  • Change in heart rate values occurs when heart
    responds to different work loads
  • Higher delta less fit cardio system
  • Stress from Internal or external conditions

5
RECOVERY HEART RATE
  • Measures the cardiac pumps ability to return to
    normal exercise.
  • Better recovery the fitter the person

6
RECOVERY HEART RATE
  • 2 TYPES OF RECOVERY
  • INTRARECOVERY
  • Time it takes for heart to recover w/in 1 workout
    session
  • INTERRECOVERY
  • Time it takes for heart and specific muscle
groups to completely recover between workout
    sessions
  • Usually recover very quick
  • If slow to recover this indicates less fit cardio
    system
  • or a warning of heart related conditions

7
MAXIMUM HEART RATE
  • Maximum number of times the heart can contract in
    1 min
  • FACTS ABOUT MAX HEART RATE
  • Genetically determined
  • Cant be increased by training
  • In sedentary individuals, it declines with age
  • In children, usually over 200 bpm
  • Tends to be higher in women than men
  • Affected by drugs
  • High/low max HR doesnt predict better/worse
    performance
  • Varies greatly among people of the same age

8
SPORT SPECIFIC MAXIMUM HEART RATE
  • It is sport specific
  • After the max is reached, one can still increase
    intensity but not heart rate
  • Factors for Sport specific max
  • Body position
  • Size and of muscle groups
  • Temp of environment
  • Type of activity
  • Type of equipment
  • Swimming vs running
  • Prone position, cold temp smaller upper body
    muscles
