Rationale
  • Manufacturing companies use increasingly
    complex automated equipment
  • Maintenance of this equipment is a core activity
    to ensure maximum production
  • Demarcation of tasks
  • Traditional maintenance is carried out by
    specialist Electricians and Fitters

4
Traditional Education Training
  • Instructor led (sage on the stage).
  • Classroom based employees released for long
    periods to receive training.
  • Generic courses based on domains of learning
not directly related to company requirements

5
Company Requirements
  • Training must focus on versatility
  • Integration of mechanical and electrical aspects
of engineering maintenance job related skills.
  • Learners must learn how to learn
  • Create awareness of most effective learning
    style.
  • Enable use of dominant learning style.
  • Training content must be available where and when
    it is needed
  • Staff cannot be released for long periods.
  • Open flexible distance learning (OFDL).
  • Content must available in various media formats.

6
Outline of the Project
  • Develop and test a training model,
  • cost effective training using a blended solution
  • Train twelve technicians in the use of the
methodology to act as support coaches
  • Develop and deliver five modules of training that
can be delivered using this training model
  • Train 100 people using these methods and evaluate
the results of the training methodology

7
Outline of the Project
  • Research the use of learning management systems
to support a (Rich Environment for Active
    Learning)
  • Research the use of learning content management
systems and the emerging standards (LOM, SCORM)
  • Implement an integrated learning and content
    management system
  • Evaluate and report on our experiences

MoFITModel for Flexible Industrial Training
There is both economic and strategic advantage
in using a Flexible Training Model with well
designed course content, simulations, exercises,
assignment work and testing on-line, supported
by desktop communication, tutorials and practical
workshops, with on the job coaching and
monitoring, all as an integrated solution to the
efficient delivery of effective training.
29
MoFITModel for Flexible Industrial Training
Achieving Economic and strategic advantage
through the implementation of a Flexible
Learning Model comes at a price.
That price is related to the blend of
Institutional, Pedagogic and Technological
resources investedin the implementation of such
a solution.
Research indicates that the return on such
investment tends to be in the longer term and
is predicated on a vigorous and sustained
application of effort in the project and maximum
senior management support.
