Title: Rutgers University's Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences IMCS and the partnership opportunities

Coastal Sciences (IMCS) and the partnership
opportunities with the Liberty Science Center

IMCS was formed in the late 1980s by Frederick
Grassle with a vision to build a window to the
sea. IMCS now is home to over 30 full-time
faculty and in a decade has become one of the
National Science Foundations top ten
oceanographic institutions. It has a PhD
program, a Masters of operational oceanography,
and an undergraduate marine sciences major. Its
mission is to discover and disseminate knowledge
of the oceans for the benefit human society.
Dr. Fred Grassle
2The Need
The oceans are changing in our lifetime. These
changes will impact human economies and society.
These changes will be the fuel tank for changes
in the global climate.
3Therefore IMCS faculty have deployed new
technologies and developed models that will allow
scientists, students, teachers, and society to
explore the oceans. This is a revolution for
oceanography and will allow for unprecedented
understanding in the coming decade.
Access data at the Coastal Ocean Observation Lab
(COOL) at marine.rutgers.edu/cool or at
thecoolroom.org
4The real-time data is piped not only to
scientists but to K-12 students and teachers via
the Kids COOL room. Lesson plans developed by
K-12 outreach group. A dedicated group exists
headed by Janice McDonnell and has been working
for a decade

5PARTNERSHIP WITH LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTERWhat does
your local aquatic world look like? Why care?

- The estuary is a collection of different habitats
with unique characteristics that function
collectively as part of a larger ecological
system. - The ecology of the estuary consists of physical
and biological processes, including a diversity
of organisms that are intimately connected. - The estuary has a long history of human uses and
influences, including commerce, transportation
and recreation. - Scientific research contributes to an improved
understanding of how the estuary functions, and
provides objective data for effective stewardship
and management of the system.
