Center for Comparative Local Governance
  • The center was established to conduct comparative
studies on local governance and to disseminate
    the results of that research.
  • The center works with other institutes in
studying systems of local governance and how they
have been implemented in Japan and other Asian
    countries.
  • Offering facilities for researchers and
supporting programs for training civil servants
in Asian countries are among the centers other
    activities.
  • The center uses its network to contribute to
building the capacity of local governments in
Asian and other countries. In addition to sharing
its comparative research results, the center
disseminates information on systems of local
governance from Japan's current trends and from
the country's history in local governance since
    the Meiji period.
  • In cooperation with Council of Local Authorities
for International Relations (CLAIR), the center
offers a library that stores documents as well as
statistical and other materials, all related to
local governance in Japan and abroad.

18

world today. The units conduct their research for
a period of two to nine years. The Center is open
to researchers from outside GRIPS who have an
interest in collaborating with the researchers
