What is a Tall Tale

• In the 1800s people in America were moving west
  and they would tell stories with exaggeration to
  help them cope with the hardships of life in the
  wilderness.

Pecos Bill

• Youngest of eleven children
• When his family went across Texas to find
  farmland he fell out of the wagon.
• He was found by a coyote who raised him.
• When he got older a man came by and told him that
  he was not a coyote.
• He took him to a ranch where he learned to be a
  human.

Slue Foot Sue

• One of the great ladies of the Texas Frontier.
• She saw Pecos Bill at his ranch and fell in love
  and married him.
• Texas was in a drought and she and Pecos Bill
  lassoed the big dipper with water in it and
  spread it all over Texas and the drought was
  ended.

Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox

• Paul Bunyan was born on July 4th.
• He was the strongest biggest baby ever born in
  the state of Maine.
• He played with the deer and wrestled with the
  grizzlies.
• One strange winter there was a blizzard of blue
  snow. He found a blue ox in the snow and named
  him Babe. They became lifelong friends.

John Henry

• Folks say that John Henry was born with a hammer
  in his hand.
• John Henry was a hard worker.
• He moved west and went to work on the railroad to
  lay tracks.
• A man was braggin about his machine and John
  Henry challenged him. He said that he could out
  hammer any machine. The machine broke and John
  Henry kept on hammer until he broke through the
  granite. Then he dropped dead.

Johnny Appleseed

• Johnny Appleseed was known as an apple missionary
  or the Appleseed man.
• He wore a tin pot on his head. He also wore a
  flour sack and did not wear any shoes.
• He traveled through the wilderness planting
  apple seeds.
• His companions were the animals.
• The farmers welcomed him into their homes.
