Superconducting Particle Accelerator Forum of the
Americas www.spafoa.orgCapitol Hill Briefing

SPAFOA OBJECTIVES
  • Provide a formal network for its industry members
to interact with government funded RD efforts
    for superconducting particle accelerator
    projects, including the International Linear
    Collider (ILC).
  • Establish a partnership between its members and
    government, national laboratories, universities,
and international design teams throughout all
    phases of accelerator program developments.
  • Provide members current information on the
progress and issues related to these programs
through newsletters, bulletins and meetings at
the National laboratories and in DC.

3
SPAFOA OBJECTIVES (cont.)
  • Prepare and present briefings and industry
position papers on behalf of the forum on
specific management and technical issues where
relevant industrial capability will benefit the
    program.
  • Facilitate two-way technology transfer between
    industry and government funded activities.

4
SPAFOA MISSION CHANGE
  • Formerly the Linear Collider Forum of America,
    founded as a 501 (c) 6 not for profit U.S.
    corporation in 2005.
  • Delays in the ILC program, primarily due to
operational slippage at CERN and DOE budget
constraints, resulted in reduced U.S. support for
    the program.
  • SCRF accelerator technology is incorporated into
several other government supported RD activities
that precede deployment of the future ILC.
  • A strong industrialization program within these
programs will mutually benefit both government
    and industry.
  • Therefore the forum which was focused on the ILC
program has become SCRF technology focused.

5
SCRF ACCELERATOR TECHNOLOGY BASED PROGRAMS
  • Examples of government funded SCRF activities
  • CEBAF Upgrade from 6 to 12 GeV at Jefferson Lab
  • ISAC-II Upgrade to the isotope separator and
    accelerator at TRIUMF
  • ILC damping rings and main linacs
  • SNS Upgrade at Oak Ridge
  • Navy Free Electron Laser program
  • Cornell Energy recovery linac
  • Project X at Fermi main linac
  • Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at MSU
  • Advanced Photon Source facility upgrade at
    Argonne
  • Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Laboratory
  • E-RHIC proposed electron-ion collider at
    Brookhaven

6
INDUSTRIALIZATION
  • Industrialization is preparing industry to
compete in the global marketplace by establishing
    government-industry collaborations during the
research, design, and fabrication of SCRF
components and systems for major government
    programs.

7
INTERNATIONAL SCRF INDUSTRIAL FORUMS
  • EIFast European Industry Forum for Accelerators
    with SCFR Technology
  • Council to Promote Advanced Accelerator
    Technologies (Japan)
  • Federation of Japanese Diet members to promote
    the ILC

TODAYS MESSAGE
  • SCRF accelerator technology is becoming high
    growth area for industry
  • Broad ranging government supported programs that
include a strong industrialization component will
lead to lower costs and higher reliability
  • As the technology matures, applications will
increase in non-government funded areas a major
application symposium and workshops are scheduled
    this fall
  • The ILC, although on a stretched schedule,
represents a major shift to volume manufacturing
    for industry.
