Nick Dupree and His Crusade
  • Aging out of Medicaid16 hours of care to 2 hours
    under the adult program
  • Nursing homeclosest one that could provide his
    needed level of care 195 miles away in LA
  • Challenged by his grandmother, Nick began a two
    year campaign
  • Wrote letters, raised public awareness of the
    situation
  • Worked with state senator to develop and
    introduce legislation to eliminate age limit on
    services
  • When bill defeated, he filed a lawsuit in federal
    court
  • His efforts caught the attention of the folks at
    AIMM who along with their friends, families and
    allies, wrote hundreds of letters to President
    Bush, urging him to take action

  • Days before his 21st birthday, Medicaid waiver
    program for 30 Alabamians approved
  • I want people to think about the larger problem
    here. I plan to keep working on this for the rest
    of my life so that everyone can be safe and can
    be included in the communityand not locked in a
    faraway nursing home awaiting their death.
