Technological preparedness of high school
students
  • A high school graduate school should be able to
  • Identify capabilities and limitations of
contemporary resources and use these resources
    routinely and efficiently
  • Identify capabilities and limitation of emerging
technologies and use these resources routinely
    and efficiently
  • Efficiently use online information resources

6
Technological preparedness of high school
students
Is partially dependent on Availability of a
computer at school The largest portion of
schools have outdated computers Availability
of a computer at home Only 51 of homes have a
Computer.
7
Technological preparedness of high school
students
It is important to remember that Nursing students
may enter nursing school with varying levels of
computer proficiency
8
The BSN Student and Use of Information Systems
  • ANA Scope Standards of Informatics Practice
says a beginning nurse should be able to
  • Document patient care using
  • word processing
  • Database
  • Spreadsheet
  • Communicate by email
  • Evaluate, and use information systems

9
The BSN Student and Use of Information Systems
Two ways a computer uses nursing information

How do I do it?
How much?
I need more information!!!

The BSN Student and Use of Information Systems
State Boards of Nursing Standards for nursing
curriculum the same for diploma, associate
degree, or BSN programs Only a few require
Research in BSN program
Associate degree entry-into-practice programs

The BSN Student and Use of Information Systems
14
Nursing informatics for the BSN student
The practice of nursing has changed!
From Providing care under a doctors authority
To Providing care In a dynamic environment
15
Nursing informatics for the BSN student
Nurses use computers in Establishment of
nursing diagnoses Establishment of
controlled clinical vocabularies Research for
evidence based practice Collaborating care with
other disciplines Telehealth to
accomplish patient care
16
Nursing informatics for the BSN student
Informatics in all nursing education program may
be
Incorporated into nursing curriculum A
stand-alone course
17
Nursing informatics for the BSN student
Very few schools of nursing offer informatics as
a stand-alone course in the BSN curriculum
18
Nursing informatics for the BSN student
In order to accomplish the ANA standards for a
beginning nurse, some of the essence
of informatics is being incorporated in all
nursing curriculum.
19
Conclusion
A course in nursing research is now almost
a standard in a BSN program . There must be a
strong exposure to informatics in a BSN
program. In the future, a stand-alone course in
nursing informatics may be required in a BSN
program.
20
Conclusion
Having a stand-alone course in nursing Informatics
in a BSN program will provide students with a
better understanding of the interaction between
computer and nurse and provide leadership that
will make these systems more efficient.
