What is done at Commission level ?
  • Financial support for more research
  • to respond to the needs of the European citizens
and improve health and quality of life
  • to support EU policies in the fields of health,
nutrition and food safety gt better informed
decisions taken by policy and regulatory bodies
better regulation policies  new EU strategy
  • Regulatory measures for the quality and safety of
    food - supplementation, contaminants, food
contact materials, EU regulation (2006/1924) on
nutrition and health claims (scientific evidence)
  • Stimulation of other stakeholders initiatives
European Technological Platform  Food for Life
to identify future key needs of food research in
and for Europe in bringing together the main
    stakeholders

6
Nutrition science of today
  • Classical concept of prevention nutrient
deficiencies diseases moved to the concept of
    optimal nutrition
  • Aim to optimise the nutrient intake to promote
overall health and well-being, to improve the
physical and mental performance and to reduce the
risk of disease such as cancer, obesity, CVD,
    diabetes.
  • It is primordial to identify and elucidated the
mechanisms of interaction between diet, genes and
environment and the synergisms between the
different components contained in food and their
    overall impact on health
  • The role of research and food industry is
    essential

7
Objective of Health-oriented Nutrition Research
  • make the consumers health and well-being the
major driving force for innovation in food
    beverage production
  • to give scientific evidences for the health claim
    of food products
  • to support the science-base of the
risk-benefit-analysis of food as well as of
    dietary recommendations
  • to develop innovative products and services for
the early diagnosis, prevention and therapy of
    nutrition-related disorders/diseases

8
  • How EU research can help ?
  • What are the new opportunities
  • in the FP7?

Food, Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology
Rationale
  • Build a European Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy
    (KBBE)
  • Respond to social and economic challenges
  • High quality food and sustainable food production
  • Food-related disorders (cardiovascular, obesity
    )
  • Infectious animal diseases and zoonoses
  • Sustainable agriculture/fishery and climate
    change
  • Clean biomaterials from renewable bio-resources
  • Involve all stakeholders (incl. industry) in
    research
  • Support CAP and CFP
  • Respond quickly to emerging research needs

12
Theme 2. Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and
Biotechnology
Sustainable production and management of
biological resources from land, forest, and
aquatic environments Fork to farm Food
(including seafood), health and well being Life
sciences and biotechnology for sustainable
non-food products and processes
13
Activity 2 Fork to farm-Food, health and well
being
  • Consumer perception and attitudes towards food,
    understanding societal trends, cultural aspects
of food, identify determinants of food choice
  • Nutrition, diet-related diseases such as obesity
    and allergy, nutrigenomics, interaction between
    nutrition, physiological and psychological
    functions, food development (e.g. dietetic,
    functional, personalised foods)
  • Innovative food and feed processing and
    packaging, smart control, waste management
  • Improved quality and assured microbiological and
chemical safety of food and feed, detection
    methods, risk governance
  • Environmental impacts on/of the food chain, total
food chain concept, global change, traceability

14
Potential of new technologies
Micro, nanotechnologies Targeting delivery of
nutrient to organs, cells Modifying structure
(fibrillar, microemulsions) Encapsulation for
slow release of flavours, fragance or bioactive
comp. or protection against ext .factors such as
heat, acid, etc
Bioinformatic Building coherent models for
physiology Omics (nutrigenomics, metabolomics,
transcriptomics, etc) Identifying molecular
interaction, metabolic pathways
Cognitive sciences Neuro-imaging Understanding of
consumer behaviour Visualization (brain) for
subjective pleasantness of food, satiety, hunger,
addiction
  • Imaging techniques (MRI, US, PET)
  • Non-invasive techniques for visualization of
    consumption and digestion

This presentation shall neither be binding nor
construed as constituting a commitment by the
European Commission
15
Research related to Obesity (FP6)
  • EARNEST To understand and quantify the effect of
early programming (foetal and early life) on
    later cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes
cognitive and mental disorders, bone health and
    some cancers
  • HELENA to increase the knowledge about the
factors influencing the food choices and food
preferences of adolescents in Europe (cultural,
social, genetic and gender differences, dietary
and physical activity patterns in European
    adolescents)
  • IDEFICS to identify and prevent the effects of
diet and lifestyle on children and infant health
  • LIPGENE To understand the interaction between
the diet and the genotype in the metabolic
syndrome. To improve the fat composition of milk
and meat products (animal nutrition) and to
provide novel sources of fatty acids (plant
    biotechnology)
  • DIOGENES to examine interactions between dietary
components and genetic and behaviour factors

16
Examples of FP6 projectson functional food
  • FLORA Flavonoids and related phenolics for
    healthy living using orally recommended
    antioxydants (STREP 3.3 m)

    CVD (IP 5.2 m)
  • ISAFRUIT to increase fruit consumption,
searching the improvement of health and
well-being of Europeans and their environment, by
taking a total chain approach, identifying the
    bottlenecks and addressing them by
    consumer-driven preferences (IP 13.2 m)
  • NUTRASNACKS Ready-to-eat food for breakfast and
