Title: Matt Hutchins 526 Individual Project

1
Matt Hutchins526 Individual Project
  • KAB Exercise and Exercise Participation

2
Participants
  • 43 participants completed a self-administered
    survey (n 43)
  • 17 male
  • 26 female
  • Ages 18-25
  • Sample of Convenience-- all participants were
currently enrolled in an undergraduate health ed.
    class

3
Knowledge Section
  • Ten Questions
  • T/F and multiple choice
  • Statistical Analysis
  • KR analysis to establish reliability
  • Mean scores indicate number correct out of 10
  • T-test showed no significant differences in
    knowledge scores
  • (Results are presented in Table 1)

Table 1
5
Attitude Section
  • Ten attitude statements
  • Participants responded to statements on a
Likert-type scale that ranged from strongly
    disagree to strongly agree
  • Data analysis consisted of Cronbach alpha to test
    for reliability for

6
Discussion
  • Cronbach aplha levels were moderate at .84
  • Females responded more positively to statements
about exercise being enjoyable and exercise
    improving self-esteem

7
Behavior Section
  • Ten questions to assess level of exercise
participation and reasons for and against
    participation
  • Analysis
  • Data analyzed to determine frequency of
    participants who met ACSM guidelines
  • Common responses to why do you AND why dont you
    exercise?

8
Behavior
9
Discussion
  • This survey found that approximately 1 out of 3
participants meet current ACSM guidelines. This
    corresponds to past research.
  • Male and female percentages for exercise
    participation were very similar.
  • Weight management was the most common reason
    cited for participation
  • Lack of time was the most common response given
for those who do not exercise.

10
Conclusions
  • Males and females have similar KABs in regard to
    exercise
  • Participants may be unaware of importance of
    monitoring heart rate during exercise

11
Recommendations
  • Education about ACSM guidelines
  • Education about importance of and how to check
    heart rate

12
Limitations
  • Sample size (n 43)
  • Limited number of questions within each subgroup
    may affect statistical measures
  • Use of a sample of convenience may decrease
    generalizability
