ACORNE Project
  • Record data from an existing MoD hydrophone array
    at RONA.
  • Develop a deployable realistic emulation
    device.
  • Develop simulation, signal processing and event
    reconstrution techniques.

7
ACORNE Project Status
  • Hydrophone Studies
  • Fish tank at Sheffield in place - being used to
study hydrophone response and test calibrator
    ideas.
  • Calibration Device
  • Lasers high power LEDs have been the main
    focus so far..
  • Proving tricky to put 1 Joule into water in 10?s
quietly! Work is proceeding on a number of
    fronts
  • heating elements with mechanical acoustic
    couplings suitable suppressed
  • using a line array to project acoustic pulse with
    the right geometry
  • Simulation Signal Processing
  • A lot of progress over the last year. We have
    developed new models for
  • shower simulations at UHE using Korsika their
    parameterisation
  • acoustic pulse shape simulations
  • simulations of hydrophone response and test beam
    data
  • signal processing.

8
ACORNE Project Status
  • RONA Data Recording
  • Delayed for several months due to an MoD upgrade
of the hydrophone array (although we will benefit
    from this).
  • Recording equipment being installed this month.
Due to the delay we upgraded the specs
  • We will record 8 hydrophones simultaneously.
  • We will be able to record constantly by
physically switching TB raid arrays once per
    month.
  • First data in a matter of weeks.
  • The analysis of RONA data is what we are
    concentrating on here at UCL.
  • Will have a copy of the data at UCL.
  • Simon in developing high level reconstruction
    algorithms ?

9
Long Term Strategy
  • At the end of ACORNE we will have quantified the
    promise of acoustic detection.
  • During that time, decide which direction to go
in, in terms of next generation multi-detection
    technique (OAR) arrays - e.g. ICE3

10
  • ARENA workshops are helping to define the
parameters of this future multi-km3 detector.
  • The next in the series is being hosted in the UK,
with ACORNE the local organising committee.
  • These workshops are extremely interesting and
attract the global leaders in this field.
  • Come and learn more in June !
