Methods of Teaching Elementary and Secondary
Education
  • By Hannah Song

2
Foundations of Good Teaching
  • Structure Routine Students know what is
    expected of them everyday.
  • Organization Preparation and thought ahead of
    time.
  • Communication with parents.
  • Dealing correctly with behavior issues.
  • Mastering the material.

3
Structure
  • This is the basis for good behavior and promotes
    the best learning environment.
  • When children know what is expected of them they
feel more confidence and comfort in the
    classroom. Make expectations clear.
  • What this means is that children should come into
the class knowing how the lesson will run.
  • Schedules should be posted, books should be
placed in familiar places, materials should be
readily accessible, bulletin boards are up
    posting childrens work.

4
Organization
  • Thorough preparation and thought ahead of time.
  • Set a good example by coming early, having
materials set out on tables, etc.
  • Students take notice of teachers who are
prepared. These teachers are respected and taken
    more seriously.

5
Communication With Parents
  • Home and school must work closely together to
ensure the highest level of success and
    accomplishment.
  • In order to show this, there must be constant
communication between the parents and teacher.
This can be done through phone calls and
    conferences.
  • Studies have shown that following through at home
and school has a tremendous affect on the
    students academic and social learning.

6
Behavior
  • Praise
  • Make expectations clear
  • Understand the student as a whole- taking a look
at home life and social aspect.
  • Take time to talk to the child. Pull them aside
from the class and show your concern.
  • There will always be difficulties when dealing
    with children. Dont give up!

7
Methods
  • First and foremost- you must thoroughly
    understand the material.
  • Elementary
  • Read Aloud- teacher reads the text out loud while
    students listen.
  • Ask them to make predictions as you read.
  • Popcorn reading- students will randomly read out
loud. Students can choose who will read next.
    This keeps them on task.
  • Acting out- students can act out certain parts of
    the story.
  • Give opportunity to ask questions.

8
Methods (continued)
  • Secondary
  • Especially in this grade level must you master
the material. At this age students will ask in
depth questions that go beyond the surface. You
must be equipped to answer these.
  • Give them an active part in the lesson. Make them
    accountable.
  • Give them a chance to teach and discuss things
    with their peers.

9
Working With Other Teachers
  • It is important to communicate with other
    teachers.
  • Two, three, four. Brains are better than one.
Share ideas and collaborate as much as possible.

10
What are we going to do now??
  • Set grade level goals
  • Short term what do we expect from the children
    this week?
  • Long term What do we envision them learning
    from the year?
  • Dont be afraid to try new things! Teachers are
like artists, we can shape and mold the future!
