Quickfacts
  • The Globe Theater was originally called the
    Shakespeare Memorial Theater, but was changed to
    the Royal Shakespeare Theater in 1961 by the
    order of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The theaters closed during the tragic outbreaks
    of the plague because it was feared it would
    spread more quickly in crowds.
  • Some people thought going to the theater was a
    sin and the plague was a punishment sent by God.
