Title: Book Clubs and Blogging with Elementary Students

1
Book Clubs and Blogging with Elementary Students
  • I am interested in knowing what types of on-line
discussion forums are available to use in the
    schools.
  • I am concerned that students who may not have
access at home will fall behind.
  • How can I help classroom teachers incorporate
    discussion forums into their classrooms?

2
Interesting !
  • Web Blogs are the new bulletin boards.
  • Blogging Voices Needed!
  • People of the Year Bloggers
  • Who says elementary students cant blog?
  • Weblogs The Possibilities are Limitless!
  • Blogs represent the latest advances in
    computer-mediated-communication.

3
What are teachers saying?
  • The interaction and response time between
teachers and students, and students and students
    has increased greatly
  • Feedback is given easier and more quickly by
    teacher and peers (peer editing)
  • Students put more thought into what they write
    because of their audience
  • Students are more attentive and motivated

4
What are teachers saying?
  • Teachers and students can collaborate more easily
    an interactive tool
  • Promotes teamwork
  • Easier to set up and maintain than a web-page.
    Parents can get more involved
  • First you read, then you think, then you begin
the process of linking and writing and more
thinking! Davis, Anne, The Write WeblogLearning
    to Blog, February 2005

5
What are teachers saying?
  • Students are making connections
  • Students practice proofreading skills
  • Students are reflecting
  • Students are building relationships
  • Students are focused and on task
  • Students have better attitudes about writing
  • Students are taking ownership and feeling proud

6
What are students saying?
  • I have provided excerpts taken from various
postings that I would like for us to share.
  • Please notice the enthusiasm, the ownership, and
the pride the students project in what they say.

7
What are critics saying?
  • The casual nature of the writing may form bad
    habits. (bad grammar, poor spelling)
  • To much like easy e-mail
  • Funding too much money for technology, not seeing
    enough results
  • Students safety is strong concern of school
    systems

8
What are advocates saying?
  • The definition of of literacy has changed
therefore our techniques and tools for teaching
literacy must change We must use tools valued by
    culture
  • Blogging, a communication tool, has the ability
    to increase reading/writing skills, critical
thinking, ability to generate ideas, and
    technology use.
  • It is important to integrate technology into the
curriculum in a way that engages students and
serves as an authentic learning experience.
  • (Kerr, Rynearson 2005)

9
What are advocates saying?
  • Blogs provide great practice in reading and
    writing
  • Promotes discussion
  • Bridges communication gaps between teachers,
    parents, and students
  • Easy to use, inexpensive
  • Can be used across the curriculum
  • Can be used across grade levels
  • Its a communication tool that enhances learning

10
What is research saying?
  • Research is in the beginning stages
  • The Regents Initiative Collaborative Research
Grant program (Texas)- will examine how extra
    reading/writing practice will increase test
scores, sophistication of posts according to
Blooms levels of cognitive thinking, and use of
technology in and outside of school

11
In Summary
  • David Warlick says that teachers are builders and
builders need blueprints. We must start with a
foundation, a foundation of literacy, not
technology. Literacy is those skills that
enable and empower a person to use their
information environment in order to accomplish
    goals. Warlick, David 2005
