  • Birth name Alfred Edward Housman
  • Born in 1859
  • Born near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, England
  • Died the 30th of April, 1936
  • His ashes were buried against the North Wall of
    St. Lawrences Church
  • A statue of him stands tall in Bromsgrove High
    Street

  • Eldest of seven children
  • Housmans younger brother, Laurence became a well
    known dramatist
  • His sister Clemence became a novelist and short
    story writer
  • Housmans mother died when he was only twelve

  • First school was Bromsgrove School that
    emphasized Latin
  • Earned a scholarship at St. Johns Collge, Oxford
  • Was appointed to the Chair of Latin at University
    College
  • In 1910 he became professor of Latin at Cambridge
    where he remained until his death

Contributions to American Literature
  • A.E Housman was well known for A Shropshire Lad
    which consists of sixty-three verses set in a
    somewhat imaginary setting
  • His other well known work was Last Poems
  • Housman finished that piece of work so Moses
    Jackson could have it, a person in which Housman
    admired greatly
  • Housmans poems became more well known during
    World War I
