What does a Speech and Language Therapist do?
  • The role of a Speech and Language Therapist
    (also known as SLTs in the UK) is to assess and
    treat speech, language and communication problems
    in people of all ages to enable them to
    communicate to the best of their ability. Speech
    and Language Therapists also work with people who
    experience swallowing and eating problems.

  • The ability to communicate is central to all
    that we do, to who we are, how we learn and how
    we relate to each other at home, at school and at
    work. Thousands of people fail to access
    education, social, economic and career
    opportunities due to communication difficulties
    (Royal College Of Speech and Language
    Therapists).

Who do they work alongside?
  • SLTs often work alongside many different
    health professionals ranging from Health Visitors
    and Nurses to Consultants.
  • In the Education establishments, they often work
    closely with teachers and Special Educational
    Needs Co-ordinators (SENCO).

Where do they work?
  • Speech and Language Therapists work in a
    variety of settings. The most common are
    usually-
  • Hospitals
  • Health Centres
  • Mainstream and Special schools
  • Assessment units and Day centres

  • Peoples homes

Who do they work with?
  • We help children and adults who may have the
    following types of problems
  • Difficulty producing and using speech
  • Difficulty understanding and using language
  • Difficulty with feeding, chewing or swallowing

  • Difficulties with fluency (stammer/ stutter)
  • A voice problem
  • Social communication problems such as autism

What other patient groups do they work with?
  • As well as assisting with these types of
    problems, Speech and Language Therapists also
    work with adults or children who may suffer from
    the following-
  • Stroke
  • Cleft Lip and/ or palate

  • Learning disability
  • Cancers of the head, neck throat
  • Neurological disorders and degenerative
    impairments such as Parkinsons disease
  • Hearing impairment
  • Head injury
  • Dementia
