Observations
  • Overall, the Institute witnessed an increase in
applications (at AIT alone, not including other
locations) from 1662 in 2006 to 1874 in 2007 an
improvement of about 13. A large portion of this
increase was in SET where applications jumped
    from 563 in 2006 to 864 in 2007 (54).
  • The increase in applications is matched by a 15
increase in acceptances -- from 562 in 2006 to
647 in 2007. This was achieved despite of the
fact that tougher admission conditions were put
in place (i.e. a more stringent English
proficiency requirement) and of course, a higher
tuition fee rate, which was increased by 14 in
2006. A large portion of this increase can be
attributed to the 62 increase in enrolment in
    SET.
  • In terms of paying students (by headcount), the
numbers moved from 605 in 2005 to 513 in 2006 to
    577 in 2007. This translates to full-fee
    equivalents of 437 in 2005, 439 in 2006 and 514
    in 2007 (17 increase over 2006).

Some lessons
  • Enrolment from Thailand leaped by 25 due to
intensified marketing efforts and possibly a
better and more efficient utilization of the RTG
funding. This was complemented by initiatives
such as Visit AIT Day in April and closer
    contacts with universities through web-based
    marketing.
  • A remarkable improvement of 382 in enrolment
from Pakistan was achieved thanks to intensified
relations with the Higher Education Commission.
  • In Indonesia, enrolment moved up by 69 and big
factor in this is due to Pulp Paper
Technologys closer links with related industries
    in the country.
  • Stronger ties with Sri Lanka and India resulted
to 33 and 15 increases in enrolment,
    respectively.
  • Relatively small in numbers but otherwise
    significant are enrolments from Afghanistan,
Mongolia, Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Iran most
possibly due to more targeted promotions.
  • More recently, we have also put in place an
internet-based AIT English Interview Test, which
allowed a few additions in enrolments from
    Cambodia, Myanmar and Indonesia.
