  • Expedited alternate route to teacher preparation
    and certification for career changers with BA and
    higher degrees
  • Helps to expand the pool of high quality
    secondary teachers in core content areas

Why does Michigan need MNRTC?
  • Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) requires
  • 4 years of mathematics
  • 3 years of science
  • Research indicates
  • Current secondary mathematics and science
    teachers are fully assigned in their content

Why does Michigan need MNRTC?
  • Michigan will need more mathematics and science
    teachers in coming years as the MMC becomes fully
    implemented
  • Job loss in auto industry and other fields
    provides an additional pool of well-prepared
    content specialists who may want to make
    transition to teaching as a career

MNRTC Participant Requirements
  • Pre-requisites
  • BA or higher degree with a major in specific
    content
  • 2.5 GPA or higher with 3.0 in content area
  • At least 60 hours of observational experience in
    secondary school or substitute teaching experience

Program Providers
  • Teacher Preparation Institutions, state
    recognized colleges and universities,
    intermediate school districts, local school
    districts or public school academies,
    professional educational organizations and
    associations, and private entities approved by
    the SBE

  • During first 3 years of implementation, providers
    will be limited to approved teacher preparation
    institutions
  • Others must work collaboratively with TPIs to
    offer programs

  • All providers must be approved by SBE
  • Must work collaboratively with local districts,
    PSAs and/or ISDs
  • Must provide annual report to MDE

Program Design
  • Limited to secondary preparation only
  • Program must be completed within 15 months or
    less

  • Limited to 15 semester credit hours not including
    6 hours of student teaching
  • 3-6 hours of reading instruction
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Educational/Instructional Technology
  • Methods of Instruction

    provided through web-based modules, mentoring, or
    seminars

  • All participants must have a mentor and coach
  • The Professional Standards for Michigan Teachers
    will be used to assess performance
