2006 Philmont Double H High Adventure Base Program
  • Expedition, 7-Day, 7-12/Crew 350
  • Located on the Torstenson Family Wildlife Center
    in Datil, New Mexico. The Double H is two hours
    Southwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • The Double H is a partnership between the Rocky
    Mountain Elk Foundation and the Boy Scouts of
    America

Philmont Expedition Description
  • Explore the Philmont high-country and the
    thrill of climbing mountains over two miles high.
    Learn rock climbing, archaeological excavation,
    and blacksmithing. Relive the Old West and ride
    a saddle horse, relive the mountain man, pack
    burros and pan for gold in clear mountain
    streams. Shoot 30-06 rifles, 50-caliber black
    powder, and hit clay targets with a 12-gauge
    shotgun.

PHILMONT CAVALCADE DESCRIPTION
  • Ride horseback over some of Philmonts most
    scenic trails. Acquire riding and packing skills
    long in use in the American West. Final day is
    spent in competition at an equestrian gymkhana.
    Riders are limited to 200 pounds of personal
    weight.

RANCH HANDS DESCRIPTION
  • If you have knowledge of horsemanship and
    horse care and want to expand your skills and
    experience, this is the program for you. You
    will spend eight days working in the horse
    department hauling hay, saddling, daily chores
    and other horse program tasks. Then you will
    participate in your own special Cavalcade
    itinerary trek for eight days.

RAYADO TREK DESCRIPTION
  • Older scouts who have mastered basic outdoor
    skills can apply for challenging select rayado
    treks. Experience more backcountry opportunities
    not available to expedition campers. Rayado is
    unparalleled for developing outdoor leadership,
    group dynamics, wilderness problem solving and
    advanced outdoor skills. Attain high personal
    grow and self-reliance. Recommend prior Philmont
    experience.

R.O.C.S. DESCRIPTION
  • Roving Outdoor Conservation School is an
    exciting program for those interested in
    conservation and natural resource management.
    Participants will camp in many different forest
    types and participate in forestry, fire ecology,
    fisheries and wildlife management, geology,
    watershed and range management. Spend 6 days
    working new and rebuilding trails.

OA TRAIL CREW DESCRIPTION
  • OA youth members have the opportunity to give
    service through the construction of hiking trails
    and backpacking while on a trek. Participants
    gain a deeper appreciation for the OA program and
    the leadership opportunities if offers. The
    program includes seven days of service and seven
    days of hiking across the ranch.

DOUBLE H DESCRIPTION
  • Wilderness Guide, a Double H staff member,
    will be with the crew the entire trek. The guide
    will provide programs for you while hiking
    throughout the backcountry. Programs include
    leave no trace, geocaching, GPS navigation, team
    building, search and rescue, map and compass,
    black powder, astronomy, archery. Martin camp
    western dinner.

  • All programs have a minimum age of 13, crew sizes
    of 5 to 11, 9-10 day at 46/day and 6-8 day at

SOMMERS DESCRIPTION
  • Enter Sommers through the portal of the fur
    trading post stockade. 28 crew cabins with a
    trading post, dining hall, lodge, sauna, voyageur
    area, Bay Post outfitters, and authentic post and
    beam style Commissary. Suitable for novice and
    experienced canoeists. Visit beautiful
    waterfalls, travel into remote country, find good
    fishing locations and pictographs

Donald Rogert Description
  • Your remote canoeing experience is nestled
    between the Quetico and Turtle River-White Otter
    Provincial Parks. Millions of acres of pine
    forests, glacier lakes, rivers, and waterfalls
    await you. Observe wildlife, catch walleye,
    northern, lake trout and smallmouth bass, Indian
    pictographs, and historic trade routes at
    Atikokan. Consider remote fly-ins.

Northern Expeditions Description
  • Outfit at a modern base near Bissett,
    Manitoba, with a gold mining heritage. Your trip
    starts with an exciting floatplane ride north
    into the Canadian bush of Atikaki Provincial Park
    (no roads). Trophy fishing and pictographs.
    Overlook some of the beautiful and rugged terrain
    in which you will be traveling and to enjoy the
    romance of the Canadian bush pilot experience.
    Primitive is the keyword.

Coral Reef Sailing
  • Aboard for a week on a 41- feet vessel
    snorkeling reefs and Looe Key , one of the most
    beautiful reefs in the Keys and part of the
    Florida National Marine Sanctuary. Study
    astronomy, navigation, fish identification and
    coral reef ecology. Sharpen your navigational
    skills, snorkeling and fishing all in one package.

Sea Exploring Adventure
  • Using one of five Tall Ship sailing vessels
    over 70-feet you will snorkel several reefs as
    you sail among the fabulous Florida Keys. Along
    the way you will troll for mackerel, barracuda
    and mahi-mahi, hopefully to supplement the ships
    stores. Among the highlights of your adventure
    is sailing to a small archipelago of island,
    fishing, snorkeling and maybe catch lobster.
    On-board navigation and star study. There are
    sailing and cooking chores aboard for all of its
    sailors.

Bahamas Adventure
  • The mere name invokes visions of white sandy
    beaches and crystal clear water. This is an
    excellent description of the area you will be
    cruising on. Taxi service to your vessel on your
    air arrival to March Harbor. You will be touring
    and a working voyage, handling lines, preparing
    food, and full participation in the operation of
    your vessel in a foreign country.

Bahamas Tall Ship Adventure
  • This adventure on a tall ship will have you
    plying the Abaco Sea in a vessel equipped to
    teach sailing, snorkeling, fishing, and
    navigation. This is an active ship and requires
    everyone to work as a team as you learn and
    experience the workings of sailing and sea
    traveling. Must be 14 years of age by September
    1, 2007

Keys Adventure
  • This exciting program offers a potpourri of
    aquatic activities than can only be experienced
    in the Florida Keys. Programs change based on
    weather patterns, but you can be assured of a lot
    of snorkeling, fishing, sailing, boat riding, and
    visiting historic areas in the Florida Keys.
    Ocean kayaking and catching lobster (during
    season) are included. You are housed in A/C
    dormitories with meals in the Brinton
    Environmental Center or on Big Munson Island. 14
    years/Sep 1, 2007

Out Island Adventure
  • Big Munson Island, over a hundred acres of
    high hardwood hammock fringed in lush mangroves,
    is much like it was when the pirates arrive in
    the 1800s. During this week-long survivor like
    experience you will be starting at the Brinton
    Center to the Island via ocean kayaks. You will
    snorkel, fish off powerboats for grouper and
    barracuda. Add snorkeling at Looe Key and
    explore the island with its animals/flora. Image
    camped under the canopy of gumbo limbo trees.

Scuba Adventure
  • You will be diving beautiful coral reefs in
    the Keys. You are scheduled to make nine dives
    (weather permitting) including a night dive.
    Accommodations are in A/C dormitories overlooking
    the Florida Bay with great meals in the Sea Base
    galley. Diving equipment supplied for this
    adventure is new and state-of-the-art. You must
    14 years old by date of attendance

Scuba Certification
  • Even if you never had a mask on your face,
    within a week you can become a certified PADI
    Open Water Scuba Diver. Fitted with all new
    equipment you are trained in the intricacies of
    safe SCUBA in specialized training pools as well
    as in the open ocean. Meals, instruction,
    housing in A/C dormitories, and four open water
    dives in the underwater wilderness. 14 attend.

Scuba Live Aboard
  • Combing the sailing and scuba diving programs
    for one incredible adventure. You will be
    spending your day diving from reef to reef
    sailing aboard a 57-foot schooner. You will be
    making 15 dives (weather permitting) including 3
    night dives. Sailing and fishing will round out
    your adventure. Age is 14 years by date of
    attendance.
