Why do we Assess?
  • Assessment is something that has been taking
place since the first teachers started teaching
    others to think.

4

5
I. Why do we Assess?
  • B. Recently there has been public outcry, (and
government regulations) to prove we actually do
    this.

6
II. Steps of Assessment
  • A. They would like us to do 6 things
  • Choose a class to evaluate
  • Select a program outcome to focus on.
  • Pick 3 different assessment tools to use for the
    evaluation.

7
II. Steps of Assessment
  • 4. Do evaluation using tools.
  • 5. Draw Conclusions based on findings.
  • 6. Plan improvements based on conclusions drawn
that can be implemented the following year.

8
III. Selecting a class
  • For the year 2008-2009 select one class to
    assess.
  • This may be any class you teach.
  • My class for 2008-2009 will be_______________

9
  • This class may be a one term course, but the
desire is that this be a year long assessment
process. No worries, we can still use a one term
    class.

10
  • Plan to do some small part each term. Ex
select tools fall, use tools winter, evaluate
    results spring.
  • This guarantees that you are constantly doing
assessment and will keep everyone happy. ?

11
IV. Selecting an Objective
12
IV. Selecting an Objective
  • You will want to select one objective from your
    Program Outcomes.
  • How do I find program outcomes? Click on link
    below
  • http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form5?results
  • Choose your program
  • Select the outcome you would like to focus on.
  • Important! This must be a different outcome than
the one you focused on last year.
  • The outcome I have selected is___________________
    _______

13
  • ? What do I do if my program is not listed?
  • Use the ISLO outcomes found at the top of the
    page at
  • http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form5?results
  • Also, when we developed outcomes we wrote down
the which of the institutional outcomes the fell
under. It may be useful to look this up and
report which institutional outcome is being
    examined.

14
  • To save time you may do this with others in your
    program or division.
  • Tools may also be selected together.
  • This will also help in producing data that
matches for producing program or division
    assessment data.

15
V. Tools of Assessment
For the year 2008-2009 choose 3 assessment tools.
(You get to pick! Arent options great?)
24 Assessment Tool Possibilities
  • Pre/post test
  • Rubric
  • Skill demonstration
  • Quiz
  • Data Sheet
  • Group Project
  • Concept Maps
  • Concept tests
  • Knowledge survey
  • Poster presentation
  • Concept sketches
  • Case Studies
  • Student survey
  • Standardized test
  • Targeted test question
  • Portfolio
  • Online tests
  • Presentation
  • Speech
  • Written paper
  • Essay question
  • Teacher evaluations
  • Colleague observation
  • Concept map

16

Or you may come up with your own assessment
tool. These assessment tools need to each be
submitted to the following web site
http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form6 On this site
you will enter the outcome you selected, the tool
you are using, the results you predict or would
like to see, and then download the tool just as
you would put an attachment on an e-mail. You
will need to do this 3 times to get all 3 tools
in there.
17
  • ??? What do I do if my tool cannot be
    downloaded?
  • Write an explanation of why the tool cannot be
downloaded into a word document and download that
    word document. ?

18

19
VI. Using tools and reaching a conclusion
Now that you have the tools selected you can
apply them to gather data.
  • Once you have the data there are 3 things you
need to do to evaluate the data
  • Look at it and draw conclusions yourself about
    what it means.
  • Have someone else look at it and draw
conclusions. Tip This can be done in a
    department meeting.
  • Make sure Javier is present for 2. If he is
not, it is like a falling tree making a sound in
the forest with no one there to hear.(at least
    invite him)

20
VII. Documenting Results and Selecting an
improvement for next year
Document your results on the same site you
entered the tools. Everything is the same except
you enter the actual outcome from the tool. The
site is http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form6
21
VII. Documenting Results and Selecting an
improvement for next year
  • Now, what are you going to do about it?
  • You must put your plan of action to improve in
the Program Review (done departmentally every 3-5
years). There is a place in it especially for
    this.
  • You may use it to develop your Professional
    Development for next year.

22
  • To let Javier know that you are working on
assessment, enter where you are and what you are
planning to do at the following site
  • http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form11
  • You should do this
  • Each term (if you are ambitious)
  • Each year (if you are a time saver who is
    practicing saying no)

23
  • To save time, the file on the previous page can
be filled out as a program, or a division.

24
VIII. Assessment Cheat Sheet
  • A. The class I have chosen to evaluate
    is_______________________
  • B. My program outcome I have selected
    http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpqua/form5?results
  • is_______________________________________________
    ______________
  • C. My 3 tools I have chosen to assess this
    program outcome are
  • ________________
  • ________________
  • ________________
  • I entered these tools to the following site along
    with desired results. http//fd8.formdesk.com/umpq
    ua/form6

25
VIII. Assessment Cheat Sheet
  • I entered the results actually achieved for each
tool at the following web sitehttp//fd8.formdesk
    .com/umpqua/form6
  • I evaluated the results with (put
    names)___________________________________________
    __________
  • Javier was present for this evaluation.
  • The conclusions and plan for the future
    are___________________________
    __________________________________________________
    __________________________________________________
    __________________________________________________
    _
  • I put these conclusions in our Program Review.

26
IX. Certificate of Accomplishment
After completing the cheat sheet for assessment
and saving in your files, fill out the
certificate below and award to self. Do this
each year. (You will feel done, but remember,
assessment is never done ?)

X. Whats Coming?
