  • Acute accent
  • Grave accent
  • Circumflex accent

Acute Accent
  • The acute accent ( ) over the vowel sounds
    /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ tells which syllable
    or syllables are stressed.
  • ba-lon (well)
  • pa-pel (paper)
  • ma-di-lim (dark)
  • sing-sing (ring)

Acute Accent
  • The acute accent is not used if the stress falls
    on the second to the last syllable or the
    penultimate syllable.
  • la-ra-wan (picture)
  • kur-ba-ta (necktie)
  • ba-su-ra (garbage)
  • si-lid (room)

  • If the word consists of more than two syllables,
    the acute accent is used to indicate the
    syllables being stressed.
  • bib-li-ya (bible)

Grave Accent
  • The grave accent ( ) is place over the end
    vowel that has a glottal stop sound. It does not
    indicate stress but just the glottal sound.
  • lu-pa (soil)

  • ma-ha-ba (long)

  • The glottal sound is lost when the ligature ng
    is joined to a word that has a glottal end vowel.
  • lu-pang ba-sa (wet ground)
  • ta-ling maig-si (short string)
  • la-ging ma-sa-ya (always happy)

Circumflex accent
  • The circumflex accent () is used over the end
    vowel with a glottal stop sound and when the
    final syllable is stressed.
