Title: First Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel

1
First Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel
2
Isaiah 289-10
  • 9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall
    he make to understand doctrine?
  • 10 For precept must be upon precept precept upon
precept, line upon line, line upon line here a
    little, and there a little

3
Precept Upon Precept?
  • Hebrew words means
  • Command
  • Ordinance
  • Isaiah 2810
  • For ordinance must be upon ordinance
commandment upon commandment here a little,
    and there a little

Tsav
4
DC 8421
  • 20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the
    power of godliness is manifest.
  • 21 And without the ordinances thereof,
and the authority of the priesthood, the
power of godliness is not manifest unto
    men in the flesh

5
4th Article of Faith
  • We believe that the first principles and
    ordinances of the gospel are
  • First, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

6
Three Essentials for Faith(Lectures on Faith)
"First, the idea that he actually exists.
"Secondly, a correct idea of his character,
perfections, and attributes. "Thirdly, an
actual knowledge that the course of life which he
is pursuing is according to his will." (Lectures
on Faith 32-5.)

Faith
Repentance
8
Ezra Taft Benson
  • Repentance means more than simply a reformation
of behavior.True repentance is based on and
flows from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. There
is no other way. True repentance involves a
change of heart and not just a change in behavior

Baptism Requirements
  • DC 2037
  • And again, by way of commandment to the church
    concerning the manner of baptism
  • All those who humble themselves before God, and
    desire to be baptized,
  • and come forth with broken hearts and contrite
    spirits,
  • and witness before the church that they have
truly repented of all their sins,
  • and are willing to take upon them the name of
Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him
    to the end,
  • and truly manifest by their works that they have
received of the Spirit of Christ unto the
    remission of their sins,
  • shall be received by baptism into his church.

12
Joseph Smith on Baptism
  • 3 Baptisms
  • Baptism of Water
  • Baptism of the Holy Ghost
  • Baptism of Fire
  • All three baptisms make one. The baptism of
water, without the baptism of fire and the Holy
Ghost attending it, is of no use they are
    necessarily and inseparably connected.

DC 39
  • 23 And again, it shall come to pass that on as
many as ye shall baptize with water, ye shall lay
your hands, and they shall receive the gift of
the Holy Ghost, and shall be looking forth for
the signs of my coming, and shall know me.

15
Joseph Fielding Smith
  • The world will not listen to the testimony of
men who tell them that the Lord lives and that he
is able to reveal his will to man today. Those of
the world cannot advance nor learn the ways of
the Lord nor walk in his paths because they do
not have the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • This was the counsel given by Peter at
Pentacost, and inasmuch as they obeyed it, they
were entitled to the testimony of the Holy
Spirit, which would bring peace and happiness,
reveal to them their duties, and enable them to
understand their relationship to the Lord.

Elder S. Dilworth Young
  • It is wondrous to know that the most magnificent
of God's creations may be duplicated-not by
technical knowledge gained here, although this
may be of help, but by such simple acts as being
kind to and honest with all people.
  • By obeying the first principles and ordinances,
one places himself in harmony with eternal
teachings that will lead him to the presence of
the Creator, and from Him he will learn to take
part in the acts of creation. (Conference
Report, April 1969, Afternoon Meeting, p.79)
