OVERVIEW
  • On April 1995, Port Said language school was
selected by the Ministry of Education as one of
11 pilot GLOBE schools in Egypt .
  • On April, 1996, Port Said School was honored by
the visit of the ex- vice American Ambassador to
Egypt, Mr. Vincent Battle who delivered the
school students their share of GLOBE instruments
    himself.

3
Overview
  • In 1996, The measures of implementing the program
in the school have been taken
  • GLOBE teachers in Port Said school made the
necessary propaganda for the program among the
school students in terms of the program goals,
    measurements, activities and others.
  • Many students have joined the program for the
    first time.

4
The GLOBE lab. Establishment
  • In 1996, A GLOBE lab. was established and
provided with a computer joined to the internet
to send and retrieve GLOBE data and also to serve
as a place for GLOBE teachers and students to
meet and discuss the program measurements,
    practice educational activities, carry out
    environmental researches and studies.

5
Thanks a lot
  • Mr. S. Al Mergawy the ex-director of the school
was always supporting us and removing any
obstacles that may hinder implementing the
    program in the school.
  • Mrs. Suzan Marzouk is always doing her best for
the success of the program in all GLOBE Schools
    all over Egypt.

6
Taking atmospheric measurements
  • In 1996, the atmospheric measurements devices
were mounted at the backyard of the school, which
became a kind of minimized weather station where
atmospheric measurements were taken for the first
time and still being taken till today.

7
Atmospheric measurements
  • Atmospheric measurements included maximum,
minimum and current air temperatures, the amount
of rain fall, its pH value, cloud cover and cloud
    type.
  • Since 1996, GLOBE students of the school have
been taking these measurements daily at the break
    time (when available).

8
Taking Hydrology Measurements
  • In 1996, hydrology measurements were conducted
    for the first time.
  • We visit the Mediterranean Sea beach regularly
once a week (when available), half an hour before
the school day to take water measurements and
determine the degree of water quality.

9
More Hydrology studies
  • We are always studying the water quality of water
    bodies in Port Said.
  • Our two main and continuous hydrology studies are
concerned with the water quality in the
Mediterranean sea and the fresh water canal that
supports Port Said with fresh water.
  • We are conducting our hydrology studies along the
    year when time is available.

10
Biometry measurements
  • In 1996, GLOBE students had been trained on
conducting biometry measurements for the first
    time.
  • A park was selected to carry out these
measurements once or twice a year.
  • A study site (a pixel) was appointed within the
park and also within the school where Biometry
    measurements are taken.

11
Taking soil measurements
  • In 1996, Students had been trained , for the
first time, on conducting some soil measurements
(soil moisture) since their instruments were
    available.
  • Soil characterization measurements have been
conducted later when their instruments became
    available.
  • We still need to spend more time with soil
    measurements.

12
NOWADAYS
  • Today, GLOBE activities are practiced and GLOBE
    measurements and taken regularly, especially
    hydrology measurements.
  • The GLOBE program team visits Port Said beach
once a week, and the fresh water canal many times
    a year.

13
A central GLOBE school
  • Port Said school is now a training centre for
other three new GLOBE schools that joined the
program recently as a part of a plan that aims at
broadening the program activities to include more
schools and we are exchanging visits with these
schools for training and practicing GLOBE
    activities together.

14
10 year achievements First Measurements
  • We have reported about 616 measurements till
26th. Of October 2003 and about 650 today.
  • About double this number, especially hydrology
measurements, was not reported because of
technical or financial problems but is used
    regularly in our environmental studies.

15
Second Studies using GLOBE instruments and
protocols
  • 1) The study of the Sudden, unexplained changes
in both air temperature and the amount of rain
fall in Port Said in May 1998 compared with May
    1997.

Keeping our eyes on water bodies
  • The studies concerning the water quality in the
Mediterranean sea, the fresh water canal and the
tap water of Port Said are continuous ones .
  • These studies raise the slogan of keeping our
eyes on the fresh water quality in all water
bodies in Port Said, so, we can warn our
politicians if there are dangers that may
threaten the life of our people in Port Said.

46
Why GLOBE??( A message to deliver)
  • 1) It helps Students to acquire the scientific
skills of using GLOBE instruments and taking
GLOBE measurements, which is an aspect that is
not given the concern it deserves in our
educational system that tends more to be pen and
paper education, so, in GLOBE students can do
    science not only know science.

47
Why GLOBE?
  • 2) GLOBE Students will acquire the skills of
using computer and the internet in sending GLOBE
data and retrieving it back and also in
    communicating with others

48
Why GLOBE??
  • 3) GLOBE Students will acquire the ability of
conducting scientific researches and also acquire
the research skills and values of scientific
honesty, working hard, group work, cooperation,
accuracy not only in recording data but also in
analyzing them, the skills that raise them as
young scientists that our nation will rely on in
    the future.

49
Why GLOBE??
  • 4) It increases the students achievements in
    Science and Maths.
  • 5) It Enhances the students awareness about the
environmental issues and dangers that may
threaten the life continuity and call them for a
positive participation in avoiding these dangers
  • 6) It allows communication with others all over
the world and exchanging experiences with.

50
Why GLOBE?
  • 7) Attending local, national and international
workshops, expeditions and conferences which is a
good experience that build their strong
    personalities.
  • 8) Acquire the skills of presenting in front of a
crowd , something that build their strong
    personalities.
  • i.e., it has educational, Scientific,
    environmental, and other benefits

51
What is still missing?
  • Many GLOBE instruments are still missing
especially for the newly added measurements
  • Many GLOBE measurements are not conducted yet
such as Ozone level, Aerosol level, ..
  • We do not have a continuous connection to the
    internet
  • The School day and schedule are very busy.

52
Ranas Impressions About GLOBE
  • Ive joined the globe program at the beginning of
the first semester of the last year 2004.
  • At first , I have enjoyed the idea of doing
GLOBE activities and measurements by my own hands

53
More Understanding
  • After that, I began to understand the importance
of what we were doing and how it can benefit our
environment and protect it from dangers and harms
    of the human activities.

54
Local environmental Issues
  • I live in a coastal region and we have the
Mediterranean sea which is exposed to a lot
of harms all the year because of the ships moving
across it in and out of Suez Canal and also the
oil tankers which may spill oil in the sea and
all these factors affecting the water and all
living organisms that live in it

55
Why I admire GLOBE?
  • I admire the globe program as I see that beside
it makes us do every experiments and use the
tools and instruments by ourselves, it also makes
us practice how to think and how to observe the
surroundings and to feel the problems of our
    environment

56
Why GLOBE??
  • and also, how to solve them and conclude the
results from our observations and it teaches us
the Cooperation spirit as we work in one team,
every one of us is doing a certain work and
finally we collect the data from every one and
all of us work and think together and conclude
    the results together

57
Effect of GLOBE on My Environmental Behavior
  • Working in GLOBE affected my environmental
behavior that I have stopped throwing any garbage
in the streets and also not to overuse the
potable water and to keep my environment clean in
    general.

58
Hopes
  • What I hope to be done in GLOBE is that it should
be continued all the year and in the summer
holiday not only in the time of our school to be
connected all the time by our environment and
    its problems
  • At last I think that it is a good ,useful,
successful project by the efforts of our
    excellent leader MR.MOHAMED EL AWADLY.
