Title: Romans 67

1
Romans 6-7
2
  • 1 WHAT shall we then say? Shall we continue in
    sin that grace may abound?
  • 2 Far be it. How shall we who are dead to sin
    continue to live in it?
  • 3 Do you not know that those of us who have been
baptized into Jesus Christ have been baptized
    into his death?
  • 4 Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism
into death, so that as Jesus Christ rose from the
dead by the glory of his Father, even so we also
shall walk in a new life.
  • 5 For if we have been planted together with him
in the likeness of his death, so shall we be also
in the likeness of his resurrection
  • 6 For we know that our old selves are crucified
with him, so that the sinful body might be
destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve
    sin.
  • 7 For he who is dead is freed from sin. (If sin
has a hold on you and the effect of sin has taken
its toll, you are still alive. Your old-self
and your new-self cannot live together. Only
    one will rule.)

3
  • 8 Now if we are dead with Christ, let us believe
that we shall also live with Christ.
  • 9 We know that Christ rose from the dead, and
dies no more and that death has no more dominion
    over him.
  • 10 For in dying he died once to sin and in
    living he lives to God.
  • 11 Likewise, you also must consider yourself as
being dead to sin, but alive to God through Jesus
    Christ our Lord.
  • 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal
body, that you should obey it in the lusts
    thereof.
  • 13 Neither should you yield your members as
instruments of iniquity to sin but yield
yourselves to God, just as if you were men who
had risen from among the dead, and let your
members be instruments of righteousness to God.
-(We are to live our lives as if we would if we
    were living in heaven.)

4
Rom 614-15
  • 14 Sin shall not have dominion over you for you
are no longer under the law, but under grace.
  • 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not
under the law but under grace? Far be it.
  • What does no longer under the law mean?

5
First Things First
  • We have to find out which law is being
    referenced here.
  • The Law of God
  • The Law of Sin and Death
  • The Oral Law of the religious leaders

6
Then
  • We have to find out what Under the Law means.
  • What does it mean to be under an umbrella?
  • Protection from the elements.

7
First Meaning
  • What does it mean to live under the United States
    Constitution?
  • To be subject to its laws
  • To be Above the Law means that
  • you are not subject to the law at all.
  • So, the first interpretation of Under the Law
is the simple fact that if you were born a Jew,
you were born under the umbrella and
jurisdiction of the Law of Moses and were subject
to its decrees just as if you are a citizen of
the US, you are under US law.

8
Second Meaning
  • If you were to do something wrong and find
yourself guilty in a court of law, what would it
mean to be under the law then?
  • To be under the law in this sense is to be
under the penalty of the law that you broke.
  • Being under the umbrella of the law is one thing.
To be under its wrath is a whole different
    story.

9
What The Law Does
  • When a preacher at a wedding says, By the power
invested in me by the state of Missouri, I now
pronounce you man and wife, what power is he
    referring to?
  • The Law! And in this case, the law gives
    blessing.
  • When a judge says, By the power that has been
invested in me by the United States of America, I
sentence you to life in prison for such and such
an act as you have been found guilty by a jury of
    your peers
  • What again is the power?
  • The Law. And what does the law bring this time?
    A curse
  • And where does the power of the law come from?
  • The one who wrote it.

10
  • The Law of God only defines what sin is and
PRONOUNCES blessings and curses. It IS the
judge. I John 34 Whosoever committeth sin
transgresseth also the law for sin is the
    transgression of the law.
  • The Law is a matter of fact. A law has no
    ability to make exceptions.
  • If you do this, this will happen.

11
From Then Until Now
  • The Law in ANY culture can only do three things
  • Define what is right or wrong in that society.
  • Pronounce a blessing
  • Pronounce a curse or a penalty for breaking it.
  • Deut. 1126 Behold, I set before you this day
a blessing and a curse 27 A blessing, if ye
obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which
I command you this day28 And a curse, if ye
will not obey the commandments of the LORD your
    God

12
  • If the most common interpretation of you are no
longer under the law is that we are no longer
responsible to keep the Law of God, then this
verse and others make no sense at all.
  • for you no longer responsible to keep the law,
    but are under grace.
  • What was the purpose of the law again?
  • To define sin.
  • Ro 320 Therefore by the deeds of the law there
shall no flesh be justified in his sight for by
the law is the knowledge of sin.

13
So Far, We Have Learned
  • We must determine through the context which law
    is being referenced.
  • Then we must determine if the author is talking
about just being subject to the law or is he
talking about being under the penalty of the law.
  • The laws job is to define sin and pronounce
judgment. That is the letter of the law. It
    knows nothing else.

14
Under the Law of Sin and Death
  • Sometimes it is difficult to determine if it the
law of sin and death or if it is under the
penalty of the law of God that is being
    discussed.
  • The reason is because they are so connected. If
you break the law of God and fall under its
penalty, it is BECAUSE you were under the law of
    sin.

15
Bottom Line
  • Sin is the breaking of Gods Law
  • Ever since Adam sinned by breaking the first
commandment God gave, a new law entered into the
    world
  • The Law of Sin and Death
  • Gen. 216 And the LORD God commanded the man,
saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may
    freely eat
  • 17 "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you
eat of it you shall surely die.
  • From this point on, all mankind would be born
under the law of sin, which by default brings
    death.

16
This is THE Problem
  • We cannot do ANYTHING about it because ALL have
sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God.
Rom. 323 and The wages of sin is DEATHRom.
    623.
  • Adams sin had never been paid for! The
sacrificial system was only a patch.
  • Something had to be done!

17
This Is THE Answer
  • There are two parts to the Law of sin and
    death
  • 1. Sin and 2. Death
  • God sent His Son to destroy the second
    part-DEATH.
  • He came to destroy the PENALTY that we all
deserve and redeem us from the curse of Adam for
all those that believe (trust and obey).
  • Why do we still sin? Because we are still in
part under the law of sin.
  • We are still under the umbrella of sin. It
just does not have any power over those who have
died. (67 For he who has died has been freed
    from sin.)
  • This is the point of living according to the
Spiritto put to death the deeds of the flesh.
    (Rom. 813)

18
FINALLY!
  • Now what does Rom. 614-15 mean?
  • 14 Sin shall not have dominion over you for you
are no longer under the law, but under grace. 15
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under
the law but under grace? Far be it.

19
  • 16 Dont you know that when you offer yourselves
to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves
to the one whom you obey whether you are slaves
to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience,
    which leads to righteousness?
  • 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to
be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the
form of teaching to which you were entrusted.
  • 18 You have been set free from sin and have
    become slaves to righteousness.
  • 19 I put this in human terms because you are
weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to
offer the parts of your body in slavery to
impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so
now offer them in slavery to righteousness
    leading to holiness.
  • 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free
    from the control of righteousness.
  • 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from
the things you are now ashamed of? Those things
    result in death!
  • 22 But now that you have been set free from sin
and have become slaves to God, the benefit you
reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal
    life.

20
This verse should take on a WHOLE new meaning!
  • Rom. 623 For the wages of sin is death, but the
gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
    Lord.

21
Romans 71-6
  • 1 DO you not know, my brethren, I speak to
them who know the law, that the law has authority
over a person as long as he lives?
  • 2 Just as a woman is bound by the law to her
husband as long as he lives but if her husband
should die, she is freed from the law of her
    husband.
  • 3 Thus if, while her husband is alive, she
should be attached to another man, she becomes an
adulteress but if her husband is dead, she is
free from the law, so that she is not an
adulteress though she becomes another mans wife.
  • 4 Wherefore, my brethren, you also are become
dead to the law by the body of Christ, that you
might become anothers, even to him who arose
from the dead, so that you may bring forth fruit
    to God.
  • 5 For when we were in the flesh, the pains of
sin, which were by the law, worked in our members
to bring forth fruits to death.
  • 6 But now we are freed from the law, being dead
to that which had hold upon us and we should
henceforth serve (vs.25) in newness of spirit and
not in the oldness of the letter.

22
77-9
  • 7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sin?
Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what
sin was except through the law. For I would not
have known what coveting really was if the law
had not said, "Do not covet.
  • Paul does not want anyone to misunderstand him.
For some even today, as in his own time, mistook
him for saying that it is the laws fault and
that it is somehow bad. He is simply saying that
the law does what it was created to do define
    sin and pronounce judgment.
  • 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by
the commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.
  • 9 Once I was alive apart from law but when the
commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

23
  • What does it mean that he was alive apart from
the law? And how could Paul being brought up
serving the law and as a Pharisee ever even be
    apart from it?
  • He was always in the law and knew every part of
it and was a strict observer of it. It is not as
he just one day read the law for the first time
and realized that he was in sin. The problem was
that he never understood the spirituality of it.
He, like the rest of his peers, only understood
the law to be regarded in the outward actions.
He did not understand the spirit of it. Nor had
it ever entered into his heart. Therefore, he
THOUGHT he was alive but did not realize that he
was dead in his trespasses until he read it from
the eyes of the spirit and not just the words or
    the letter.

24
710-13
  • 10 I found that the very commandment that was
intended to bring life (if I kept it) actually
brought death (because I broke it).
  • 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by
the commandment, deceived me, and through the
    commandment put me to death.
  • 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment
    is holy, righteous and good.
  • 13 Did that which is good, then, become death to
me? By no means! But in order that sin might be
recognized as sin, it produced death in me
through what was good, so that through the
commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

25
714-21
  • 14 We know that the law is spiritual but I am
unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
  • 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I
want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
  • 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree
    that the law is good.
  • 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it,
but it is sin living in me.
  • 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that
is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to
do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
  • 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do
no, the evil I do not want to dothis I keep on
    doing.
  • 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is
no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me
    that does it.
  • 21 So I find this law at work When I want to do
good, evil is right there with me.

26
722-25
  • 22 For in my inner being I delight in Gods law
  • 23 but I see another law at work in the members
of my body, waging war against the law of my mind
and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at
    work within my members.
  • 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me
    from this body of death?
  • 25 Thanks be to Godthrough Jesus Christ our
Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to
Gods law, but in the sinful nature a slave to
    the law of sin.

27
Romans 81-2
  • 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus,
  • 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the
Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin
    and death.

28
Chapter 319-20
  • 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it
says to those who are under the law, that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world may
    become guilty before God.
  • 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh
will be justified in His sight, for by the law is
    the knowledge of sin.
  • You cannot be saved by just merely keeping Gods
word. Why? Because everyone has broke His Law
and are guilty before him. Keeping Gods Law
does not lead to salvation. Its purpose is to
show us and define for us exactly what sin is and
reveal to us how to please Him.

29
  • they did not become more favorable to him, but
desired he might be cast into the den of lions
    according to the law.
