Warm-Up
  • Simplify.
  • 1. 3(a 5)

Lesson 2.1Add and Subtract Polynomials
  • GPS
  • MM1A2c

3
Essential Question
  • How do we add and subtract polynomials?

4
Vocabulary
  • Monomial A number, a variable, or the product
of a number and one or more variables with whole
    number exponents.
  • Binomial A polynomial with two terms.
  • Trinomial A polynomial with three terms.
  • Polynomial A monomial or a sum of monomials,
each called a term of the polynomial.

5
Vocabulary
  • Degree of a Polynomial The greatest degree of
    its term.
  • Leading Coefficient When a polynomial is
written so that the exponents of a variable
decrease from left to right, the coefficient of
the first term is the leading coefficient.
  • Degree of a Monomial The sum of the exponents
of the variables in the monomial. The degree of a
    nonzero constant term is 0.

6
Example 1Rewrite a Polynomial
  • Write so that
the exponents decrease from left to right.
Identify the degree and the leading coefficient
    of the polynomial.
  • Solution
  • The polynomial can be rewritten as
  • The greatest degree is 5, so the degree of the
polynomial is 5, and the leading coefficient is
    13.

Guided Practice for Example 1
8
Example 2Add Polynomials
  • Find the sum.

9
Example 3Subtract Polynomials
  • Find the difference.
