  • You DO NOT begin your 150 CAS hours until the
    summer after 10th grade.
  • You DO need to complete 25 service hours for FL
    Bright Futures over 9th and 10th grade!

FL Bright Future Service Hours
  • Florida Bright Futures requires 75 service hours
    during high school.
  • Your 50 CAS Service hours will count toward the
    75 hour requirement.
  • We require that you complete the remaining 25
    hours during your freshman and sophomore years.
  • If you are uncertain about whether an activity
    can count for community service hours, check with
    Ms. Johnson before starting work on those hours.

Group 2 Foreign Language (FLANG)
  • French/Spanish/Latin I
  • IB Languages are accelerated and cover more
    material than standard language classes. For
    this reason, students MUST be enrolled in Pre-IB
    FLANG I
  • When school begins, you may move up to Foreign
    Language II after passing a comprehensive Pre-IB
    FLANG II exam
  • The Language you choose will be the Language you
    study for all four years, so please choose
    carefully
  • Depending on your personal selections, you may be
    able take two Pre-IB FLANG I courses (i.e. French
    and Latin)you can then choose at the end of the
    year which language to take for 4 years

Group 2 French
  • Ranked as the second most influential language in
    the world
  • Shares the most word roots with English over
    other languages--helps with SAT/ACT scores
  • Fine Arts and Humanities are steeped in French
  • In addition to English, it is commonly the only
    official language of major international
    organizations (United Nations, Olympics, Red
    Cross)
  • Celebrities who speak fluent French Johnny Depp,
    Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Robert De Niro,
    Madonna, and William Shatner (among others)
  • Can also be taken as an elective!

Group 2 Spanish
  • 3rd most spoken language in the world, after
    English and Chinese
  • One of the most widely used languages in
    international communication
  • 1 out of every 10 US residents speak Spanish at
    home--many of whom are your friends
  • Latin culture is an important part of
    popular American culture 
  • Spanish is the second must used language in
    international communication--especially business!
  • South and Latin American countries are quickly
    becoming some of the most important international
    political and business partners
  • Can also be taken as an elective!

Group 2 Latin
  • Builds vocabulary skills in English, French and
    Spanish
  • Studies find it improves performance on SAT and
    PSAT
  • Prepares you for careers in medical and legal
    professions!
  • Study the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome
  • Helps with college admissions (especially highly
    selective schools)
  • Helps you develop critical/analytical thinking
    skills
  • Can also be taken as an elective!

Group 3 Social Sciences
  • You will study beyond Western civilization into
    countries and cultures all over the globe
  • This course will help you prepare to succeed in
    high-level academics

Group 4 Experimental Sciences
  • The 9th grade pre-IB science course is Biology
  • You will receive preparation for science
    standards for Duval County and Florida
  • Your teacher will lay the groundwork for concepts
    that you will use throughout your IB career

Group 5 Mathematics
  • Students will be enrolled in Geometry Pre-IB
    Honors
  • If you are currently enrolled in Geometry, you
    will take Algebra II
  • If you received all As your 8th grade year in
    math and are currently enrolled in Algebra I, you
    are eligible to take two math courses your
    Freshman year (called doubling-up)

Group 5 Doubling Up in Math
  • Choose this path only if you want to go to the
    highest level of IB Mathematics
  • Must have all As in Algebra I to double-up
  • In 9th grade, you will take both Geometry and
    Algebra II
  • Algebra II will count as your freshman elective
  • You must personally conference tonight with our
    math teacher before registering. The teacher must
    verify that you attended the conference session
    before you register
  • Doubling-up does not remove the requirement to
    take an IB math course in the senior yearyou
    must still take 4 years of IB math!

Group 6 Subjects that requireFreshman Courses
  • All IB students take a 6th Subject as part of the
    IB curriculum. Some sixth subjects have
    pre-requisites that start in the 9th grade year
  • IB Art Must take Draw/Paint I in 9th grade
  • IB Computer Science Must take Computer
    Programming I in the 9th grade
  • Taking one of the Pre-IB pre-requisite courses
    does not lock you into taking that 6th Subject
    as a Junior/Senior. Just make sure you dont lock
    yourself out of a 6th Subject by not completing
    the pre-requisite coursework

Academic Integrity
  • IB has guidelines on ethical behavior expected of
    students. There is an excerpt in your folder with
    IBs definitions of unethical.
  • IB students must meet IBOs ethical standards and
    we expect our Pre-IB students to know how to act
    within this code.
  • All Paxon students must meet Duval Countys
    ethical codes. Duval County and IBO codes will be
    more thoroughly examined at the beginning of next
    school year.
  • If you arent sure if a certain action is
    unethical according to IBO or Duval County, DO
    NOT DO IT.

Registration
  • Classrooms are set up with a portion of the
    alphabet.
  • IB students will guide you to the classrooms
    where you will meet with an IB Teacher and IB
    student.
  • Any students interested in pursuing the highest
    level of IB Math MUST remain in the Auditorium.
    You will go to your registration room afterward.
  • Ms. Johnson and Ms. Breitenbach will remain in
    the auditorium for troubleshooting.

Registration Rooms
After registering, you are free to leave or
return to the Auditorium to sign up for IB PAC or
purchase a t-shirt.
