  • Built around 1369
  • Intended for Pariss defense
  • By 1600s used as a prison.
  • Prisoners include Marquis de Sade and Voltaire
  • Attacked by a mob on July 14, 1789
  • Storming of the Bastille started French
    Revolution to overthrow Louis XVI
  • Seven Prisoners freed.

La Sainte-Chapelle
  • Gothic Catholic Chapel
  • La Sainte-Chapelle means the Holy Chapel
  • Pierre de Montreuil was architect
  • Louis IX had it built
  • Built around 1244
  • Created to hold relics of the Holy Land
  • Said to store Jesus Christs crown
  • Not intended to be a public building
  • During French Revolution it was symbol of royalty
    and religion.
  • Surrounded by Palais of Justice on the Ile de la
    Cité near Notre Dame
  • It was built within the courtyard of a royal
    palace

Architecture of the Sainte Chapelle
  • Architecture based on palace chapels
  • Modeled after chapels like Charlemagne built
  • Lower level is the crypt, where the relics were
    stored.
  • Spiral staircases
  • Stained glass windows from floor to ceiling
  • Create a beautiful mosaic of light on the floor
    from the sun.
  • North windows depict scenes from the Old
    Testament
  • South windows show New Testament scenes
